BLACKPINK's Jisoo has made her highly anticipated return in Prime Video's zombie comedy series titled 'Newtopia.' She stars alongside Park Jeong-min, who plays her romantic interest. The storyline centers on a young couple, Lee Jae-yoon and Kang Young-jo, as they navigate the complexities of their relationship. Jae-yoon is serving in the military, facing an uncertain future and numerous insecurities, while his girlfriend Young-joo confronts her own challenges, ultimately deciding to end their relationship. The situation escalates dramatically when a zombie outbreak wreaks havoc, complicating their emotional turmoil and sense of duty.

The final episode of the zombie K-drama featuring Jisoo and Park Jeong-min aired on March 21. This limited series, consisting of just eight episodes, wrapped up with an uninspired and foreseeable conclusion. From its plot to the acting, Newtopia does not deliver the excitement or intrigue that was hinted at in the earlier episodes. Although it concludes with a cheerful reunion of the heroes, Newtopia ultimately represents a significant missed opportunity, lacking the ability to engage its audience.

The sluggish tempo and gruesome zombie confrontations become wearisome to observe. Even Jisoo and Park Jeong-min seem to lose their vitality at times, as the storyline and character dynamics fail to deliver a compelling chemistry. What began as an endearing love story in the initial episodes regrettably diminished into something unremarkable by the finale.

Newtopia attempts to incorporate dark humor through a series of comedic misadventures. It merges elements of comedy, horror, and romance but ultimately falls short due to a poorly structured narrative. The writing lacks a steady rhythm, resembling an underdeveloped zombie comedy. While there are moments of humor and chaotic scenes, the overall experience feels monotonous and repetitive. A storyline that could have been effectively wrapped up in 4 to 5 episodes is unnecessarily stretched across 8 episodes, each approximately 50 minutes long.

Beyond the grotesque zombie battles and excessive violence, there is little else to engage the audience. Jisoo, known for her potential in Snowdrop, could have evolved into a dynamic character, yet her portrayal appears to be executed with a lack of enthusiasm.

Nonetheless, Jisoo's romantic interest, along with the supporting cast, including In-hoo, Arron Park, and Jae-yoon, delivered several amusing moments that compensate for the show's lack of charm. The quirky soldiers and their humorous exchanges contribute positively to an otherwise dull and easily forgettable series. The supporting cast comprises notable actors such as Hong Seo-hee, Tang Jun-sang, Lee Hak-joo, and Kim Jun-han, who play significant roles.

The eccentric main characters had great potential to create a chaotic love story, but this opportunity was squandered due to a disjointed narrative. Their interactions are limited to a few flashback sequences and a brief two-minute reunion at the end.

Newtopia Final Verdict

In summary, Newtopia offers a whimsical viewing experience filled with the amusing antics of undead beings. However, it does not effectively convey its core themes due to a loosely structured narrative when compared to other zombie comedies in television and film. Even with Jisoo and Park Jeon-min in leading roles, Newtopia may not be worth your time if you are seeking a compelling plot that combines humor and excitement.
