The story of Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai:
Sam (Lijomol Jose) shares a cozy home with her loving mom, Lakshmi (Rohini). One day, Sam decides it’s time to introduce her mom to her partner. Excited to meet her future son-in-law, Lakshmi is taken aback when she discovers that Sam is actually dating a girl named Nandini (Anusha). Lakshmi struggles to accept her daughter’s unexpected choice.
Review of Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udama
Right after a pivotal moment in the film, as it transitions into the post-climactic phase, Sam’s father Devaraj (Vineeth Srinivasan) tells his daughter, “Sam, no matter what, appa loves you.” This comes from a father who struggles to understand his daughter’s choices, which are hers to make, and who finds it hard to let go of societal pressures in favor of her desires. Despite his genuine love for her, it raises the question: why can’t he fully support her and stand by her? He’s not being dishonest when he expresses his love; he truly cares. But should we admire a man who reassures his daughter after an unexpected event, or criticize him for his grand statements that don’t match his actions? At this point, Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai gets incredibly real.
Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai dives deep into various themes, including classism, intersectional feminism, gender norms, and body autonomy, among others. These topics aren’t presented as lofty ideals or academic lectures in the film. Take Lakshmi, for instance. She appears to be a loving mother and a strong, independent divorcee who knows when to ask her maid to step away from the dinner table during family discussions. She understands that her ‘tomboy’ daughter should wear a kurta when her girlfriend comes over. Yet, despite having made choices about her own body, like terminating her second pregnancy due to concerns about physical pain, she contradicts herself by shaming Devaraj’s kind-hearted second wife for not having children.
Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai delivers its messages in a straightforward yet impactful way. I loved the moment when Deepa Shankar casually mentions to a downcast Sam about two women in her neighborhood who share a close bond. It’s a simple line, but it really drives home the idea that queerness or homosexuality isn’t just for a select few; it makes the concept feel more relatable and normal. While the film features a small cast, it effectively tells a compelling story about intersectional feminism. The women in Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai are the driving force of the narrative, bravely tackling deep and sensitive human emotions. For example, Lakshmi, who could inspire many women, also finds herself caught in the societal traps of patriarchy and stereotypes. The writing truly shines, and the cast—Lijomol, Rohini, Deepa Shankar, Anusha, Kalesh, and Vineeth—brings a genuine feel to their roles. With the background score and music by Kannan Narayanan enhancing the experience, especially during the scene where two women let loose and dance freely, the film’s message about the importance of self-expression resonates even more.
The movie has a few slow parts at the start that drag on a bit until the big reveal, and there's a lengthy scene involving sexual assault that feels unnecessary. While these could be seen as creative decisions, they get overshadowed by a more straightforward yet complex storytelling approach, making Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai a significant advancement in Tamil cinema.
The verdict on Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai
Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai tells a story that's really refreshing and doesn't come off as preachy at all. Even though it's packed with dialogue, the way it's put together makes it a solid human drama with well-developed characters. When the cast works together seamlessly, it turns into a well-crafted drama that feels like a step forward for a progressive society.
