Logout film review
Starring: Babil Khan
Directed by: Amit Golani
Rating: ★★★

I recalled a quote I came across while watching Logout: phones are becoming smarter, but people seem to be getting dumber. Nowadays, buzzwords like ‘social media’ and ‘influencer’ are everywhere. Yet, as Babil’s character points out, “While creating content, I became content myself,” which perfectly captures the essence of this medium.

Directed by Aamir Golani, Logout follows Pratyush Dua (played by Babil), who is eagerly waiting for his follower count to reach 10 million to secure a lucrative brand deal. One night, while out partying, his phone gets stolen. He then receives a call from a fan who initially appears to be helpful. However, as the plot unfolds, things take a darker turn, and you’ll have to watch the film to see how it all plays out.

With a runtime of under two hours, Logout could have been even tighter. The use of an internet meme as Pratyush’s ringtone feels out of place and unnecessary, as the film’s message is already clear without the forced humor of the ‘Paani pila dijiye’ meme. Fortunately, the film quickly regains its focus, and the filmmakers’ intentions become clear.

Babil does a great job portraying the life of a social media influencer, expressing frustration over the smallest things, like resisting dance trends that his competitors follow, even as his team tempts him with the dream of reaching 10 million followers. Maintaining individuality is tough in a world where everyone wants to replicate what has worked for others. Logout also comments on the extremes people go to for social media fame and likes—whether it’s adopting a pet or promoting things they actually dislike in real life. (This has been a trend with movie stars too, after all.)

Written by Biswapati Sarkar, Logout serves as a suspense drama but tends to lose its way as it goes in circles. You can only stretch a rubber band so far before it snaps. The idea of Pratyush being held hostage just because someone accessed his phone is definitely intriguing.
