Logout story:

A devastating incident unfolds in the life of Pratyush (Babil Khan), a 26-year-old social media influencer, right as he approaches the milestone of 10 million followers. Caught in a harrowing game of cat and mouse, he becomes ensnared by an obsessive fan, leading to the collapse of his carefully curated existence. "Logout" tackles the pressing issue of digital addiction, exploring the dangers of being trapped in a virtual realm. This film is both timely and significant, prompting audiences to reflect on the growing influence of digital dependency and the security of their online lives.

Logout review:

When I recently viewed Vikramaditya Motwane's CTRL featuring Ananya Panday on Netflix in 2024, which brought back memories of how Black Mirror lingered in my thoughts for two days after I began watching it. Currently, alongside the latest season of the Netflix series, a new Hindi film has emerged that explores the impact of social media on individuals and highlights how we often find ourselves looking down, our eyes glued to our phone screens.

Logout centers on a social media influencer who rapidly rises to fame and manages every aspect of his life through his smartphone. He oversees everything in his home, from lighting to cleaning appliances, and utilizes a voice-activated device akin to Alexa for placing orders and handling various household tasks. The plot thickens when a young influencer, on the verge of reaching 10 million followers on his social media platform, has his phone stolen by an obsessed fan. What unfolds next is worth exploring.

The film, which runs for under two hours, introduces Pratyush, known online as Pratman, who gained notoriety for his performances of both male and female roles in the digital series Laila Majnu. The film also features a cameo by Bhuvan Bam, adding a nod to his influence. Pratman is determined to expand his online presence and attract a substantial following to achieve recognition and secure lucrative brand partnerships.

During a night out with friends, Pratyush indulges in excessive drinking, and the following day, he discovers that his phone is missing. We can all relate to that anxious feeling of losing our phone, akin to an addiction. In his frantic search for the device, he eventually receives a call from an unfamiliar girl, setting off a troubling journey that persists until the film's conclusion.

If I were to encapsulate Logout in a single word, it would be "disturbing," in both positive and negative senses. The film illustrates the extreme consequences of being a public figure and the fervent following that can lead individuals to drift away from reality. Additionally, it highlights the need for a means of escape from those who provide a sobering reality check, which, ironically, can also be found through a phone.

The film predominantly features Babil, with his sister, portrayed by Rasika Dugal, making only a brief appearance. After losing his phone, Pratyush isolates himself in his room, communicating with an unknown girl through an internet voice call, growing increasingly anxious as time passes.

The film effectively captures the teenage experience, ranging from a gentle, infatuated admirer to a menacing stalker with no boundaries. The moment the stalker's voice is heard, a sense of impending danger becomes palpable. I anticipated that the narrative might escalate to a point where the stalker would compel Pratyush to undertake perilous tasks, reminiscent of the film's opening scene.

However, all she truly sought was his undivided attention, mirroring the focus she consistently offered him. The film poignantly addresses real-life issues, such as the diminishing attention spans caused by our reliance on smartphones, which detracts from the joy of engaging with others face-to-face. This shift in focus leads to a loss of critical thinking, as we increasingly depend on our devices to perform cognitive tasks that our minds should handle.

The girl repeatedly expresses her desire for Pratyush to listen to her, and when she realizes he is not doing so, chaos ensues.

Logout explores the theme of external validation that many influencers crave from strangers across the globe. Even average individuals often feel disheartened when their social media posts receive minimal engagement, leading them to believe they are unlikable. This sentiment resonates with countless young people today.

The film delves into the mindset of a fan who believes their idol belongs solely to them and cannot be shared. This psychological perspective enhances the narrative, as we witness Babil's solitary journey and the profound loneliness he experiences without access to his phone.

Directed by Amit Golani, known for his work with The Viral Fever, the film is penned by Biswapati Sarkar, who also contributes to the story.

The smartphone is not merely an accessory in our lives; it has become integral to our existence, as we place unwavering trust in it and store our vital and sensitive information within, pun intended!

This phenomenon is reminiscent of a situation we encountered nearly nine years ago, where Shah Rukh Khan portrayed a character solely focused on himself, showcasing one of his finest performances in recent memory. However, it is important to acknowledge the niche film Logout, which merits recognition for its portrayal of the internet as a perilous environment. It highlights the risks associated with being an influencer, which can be detrimental not only to themselves but also to those around them.

The case of Apoorva Mukhija, known as The Rebel Kid, exemplifies this issue, as she faced an unjust level of animosity for her statements. The threats of rape and murder directed at her illustrate the troubling reality of our society. Logout further emphasizes that many individuals perceive popular celebrities as mere extensions of their devices, treating them as if they can be manipulated like the phones they carry.

It appears that many have lost their moral compass and disconnected from reality, as if it has vanished entirely. Logout serves as a poignant reminder that what we observe through screens does not equate to real life, nor is it intended to. In truth, there seems to be no genuine reality left, as people increasingly choose to disengage from it.

Logout verdict:

Logout hits the right dis-connection. A chilling cautionary tale in the age of likes and lies, it asks what happens when going offline means losing your mind. Babil Khan powers through a haunting solo act, while the film dials into the dangers of digital devotion.
