Kudumbasthan Review: A Hilarious Take on Family Dynamics and Financial Struggles
2 months ago | 5 Views
Naveen (Manikandan) is the main provider for his family, which includes his wife Vennila (Saanve Megghana), whom he secretly married, and his parents. After a big fight at work, he stands his ground and refuses to say sorry for something he believes he didn’t do, leading to his dismissal. Faced with family expectations and money troubles, the story revolves around how Naveen navigates these challenges in his life.
Kudumbasthan Film Review
Manikandan is back with another gem after the hits Good Night and Lover, bringing us a story that might seem simple at first glance but is packed with detail on screen. The situation in Kudumbasthan feels relatable, especially if you find yourself stressing out by the 20th of each month when your bank account starts to dwindle and chores are piling up. This film captures those feelings in a way that's both funny and understanding, steering clear of mockery. Just think about the impact of losing a job, and you’ll see how the film sets the stage for a heartfelt yet comedic drama.
Kudumbasthan kicks off with a hilarious first half. After a quick scene where Naveen and Vennila run off to get married, the film dives deep into family drama. The first hour is a nonstop ride of laughter, almost like a series of perfectly woven comic sketches. Prasanna Balachandran, who acts and writes, along with director Rajeshwar Kalisamy from Nakkalites, use their YouTube experience to craft a screenplay and dialogue that are both funny and wholesome. The one-liners hit just right, and simply stating them doesn’t do justice to the fresh comedy Kudumbasthan has to offer.
Kudumbasthan always manages to sneak in some emotional moments amidst the chaos. Take Naveen, for instance. He keeps his struggles hidden from his family but still finds time to connect with his pregnant wife by talking to her belly at night while she sleeps. It’s such a sweet touch when he gently places Vennila’s hand on him as he lies next to her, pondering how to tackle life’s challenges. This moment hits home every time because earlier in the film, we see the couple at the registrar’s office, where Vennila shyly asks if she can hug him after a little spat. It’s these little things that make the characters so lovable.
Once you get past the initial scenes that hint the film might be a bit exaggerated but still entertaining, you really get into the groove of the humor. The creators have clearly put in the effort to build this quirky world. The emotions in Kudumbasthan resonate well, showcasing characters that feel both relatable and larger than life. The cast, including Guru Somasundaram as the pompous Manohar, Sundarrajan as Naveen’s dad, and Balaji Sakthivel as Naveen’s boss, really complement the main actors and elevate the overall performance.
After the intermission, the screenplay does lose a bit of its spark, and the humor takes a backseat as the drama steps in. However, Kudumbasthan quickly wraps things up in a way that feels reminiscent of those classic Crazy Mohan-Kamal Haasan movie endings, making it easy to laugh—not at the characters, but at the film itself.
While Kudumbasthan might leave some storylines hanging, like Manohar’s relationship with his wife and his work life, it still manages to hit the right emotional notes. This family drama sets a strong tone for Tamil cinema this year.
Kudumbasthan Movie Review
Manikandan hits it out of the park again with Kudumbasthan, delivering a mix of clean comedy, clever writing, and a fun vibe. But there’s more to it than just that. The film really knows how to showcase its cast's talents, which shows that Rajeshwar is a director to keep an eye on. Overall, Kudumbasthan feels like that perfect movie that appeals to everyone, making it clear that Tamil cinema is off to a great start in 2025.
