Kaushal vs Kaushal Review: A Heartfelt Tale of Solitude and Struggle

Maintain simplicity. Fans of sitcoms may recognize the source of this phrase, but even for those unfamiliar, this principle consistently applies. In our efforts to enhance films with various elements, such as celebrity cameos and exotic filming locations, the core message can sometimes become obscured. I am pleased to report that Kaushaljis vs Kaushal avoids this pitfall and proves to be an enjoyable viewing experience.
What is Kaushaljis vs Kaushal about
Directed by debutant Seema Desai, the narrative prompts reflection: how would one respond if their adult parents suddenly opted for divorce due to incompatibility?
Yug Kaushal (Pavail Gulatie), who feels embarrassed by his small-town background, grows weary of the constant bickering between his parents, Sahil and Sangeeta (Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha). In a moment of frustration, he proposes that his generation should choose to ‘move on’ when faced with issues. The couple embraces this notion and decides to separate. Naturally, Yug's life is turned upside down, especially since the woman he wishes to marry, Kiara Meena Bansal (Isha Talwar), desires a happy, intact family. How will he convey this news to her? Is it possible for him to prevent the divorce? This dilemma drives the remainder of the plot.
What works
This marks a strong debut for the director, as addressing the beliefs of ‘Gen Z’ can be a precarious endeavor. It risks devolving into a lecture that may disengage the audience. While Kaushaljis vs Kaushal (admittedly a lengthy title) flirts with this territory near the conclusion, it primarily offers a lighthearted experience. Filmed entirely in Noida and Kannauj, the narrative effectively captures the tranquil essence of small-town life.
The pacing of the film is commendable, and the narrative progresses smoothly without interruptions. The ensemble cast exhibits strong chemistry, which maintains viewer engagement. Ashutosh and Sheeba, both seasoned performers, convincingly portray a couple grappling with the frustration of unfulfilled aspirations. Seemaa, who also contributes to the storyline, skillfully incorporates the theme of Empty Nest Syndrome, poignantly illustrating the loneliness parents experience when their children leave home.
However, the climax falls short of being impactful. In terms of performances, Ashutosh has now comfortably embraced the role of a father. Following his portrayal in Loveyapa, he takes on the character of a qawwali enthusiast; although his playback scenes may lack authenticity, he manages to deliver a commendable performance. Sheeba similarly excels in her role. Pavail effectively fulfills his character's requirements, while Isha's part leaves a minimal impression.
Brijendra Kala and Gresha Kapoor, portraying the couple's friends, perform admirably. The music complements the narrative, yet it tends to fade from memory once the film concludes.
In summary, Kaushaljis vs. Kaushal is an endearing and enjoyable film. Viewers should not approach it with high expectations; instead, they may find themselves pleasantly surprised by its charm. It is a modest production with a significant emotional core, currently available for streaming on Jio Hotstar.
