Shreya, portrayed by Nithya Menen, is an architect residing in Chennai who discovers that her partner has been unfaithful just days prior to their wedding celebrations. Concurrently, Siddharth, played by Ravi Mohan, is a laid-back structural engineer who is reluctant to embrace the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. A series of circumstances culminate in Shreya becoming pregnant through IVF treatment and sperm donation, coinciding with Siddharth's contributions around the same period.

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a film that compellingly suggests that love can manifest at any moment, often in unexpected ways, provided one has found their true match. The events depicted in the film unfold purely through coincidence and fortune. Siddharth, who is eager to start a family, accompanies his friend Sethuraman (Vinay Rai) to a sperm bank to freeze his sperm, without fully contemplating the long-term implications of such a decision, simply because his homosexual friend requires it. By a twist of fate, Siddharth's specimen inadvertently becomes the sample used by Shreya, who is seeking IVF treatment, resulting in her immediate pregnancy. Their paths cross again by chance in a bar, and years later, they find themselves living in the same apartment and collaborating on the same project. The continuous connections between the protagonists lack any logical explanation, relying instead on the creative liberties taken by director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi.

Kadhalikka Neramillai aims to present itself as a "modern" love story, which is evident in its brief references to contemporary concepts and ideologies that resonate with today's society. For instance, when Shreya cites her PCOD as a reason for her desire to have a child soon, or when Sethuraman is introduced as a gay character, the film appears to adopt a somewhat pretentious tone, attempting to engage with current societal issues. While these elements are a welcome addition to the narrative, they do not significantly enhance the storyline, rendering them somewhat superfluous. By the midpoint of the film, the fate of Sethuraman's character remains unclear, and there is little exploration of Shreya's pregnancy journey in relation to her PCOD. Furthermore, the film's attempt at modernism is undermined by a body-shaming remark directed at Siddharth's ex-girlfriend, Nirupama (TJ Bhanu), referring to her as "otada kutchi" (broomstick).

The narrative of Kadhalikka Neramillai is straightforward. Two individuals with contrasting desires encounter one another by coincidence, and a connection between them is sparked through means other than romance. There is a resemblance to OK Kanmani, which extends beyond the association with Nithya Menen. Similar to the Mani Ratnam film that presented a couple opposed to marriage ultimately tying the knot, Kadhalikka Neramillai adopts a comparable perspective. It raises the question of how long Tamil cinema will continue to depict characters who challenge traditional views on marriage and parenting, only to conform to societal expectations by the conclusion. While the decision to become a parent is a personal one, and Siddharth opts against it, he too succumbs to societal pressures. Although I support the idea of individuals evolving in their beliefs over time, it prompts the inquiry of when we will see films featuring characters who choose to embrace what society deems taboo. Kadhalikka Neramillai had the potential to explore the lives of those who prefer to remain child-free, yet it ultimately conforms to conventional norms and societal expectations. Despite commendable performances from Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan, the film's narrative fails to deliver an engaging and thought-provoking experience, as it ultimately aligns with traditional views on marriage and parenthood.

Ravi Mohan and Nithya Menen are undeniably the foundation of Kadhalikka Neramillai, which offers little to its supporting characters beyond ridicule. For instance, TJ Bhanu faces mockery for her slender physique, while Vinay’s character, Sethuraman, does not receive a well-deserved character development, especially considering his introduction as a queer character. Consequently, Kadhalikka Neramillai does not succeed in being an engaging and enjoyable film, despite the notable talent involved in the project.

Kadhalikka Neramillai seeks to portray a contemporary love story, focusing on a couple who have moved past the initial excitement of their relationship. However, it ultimately results in a lacklustre narrative that fails to delve deeply into the complexities of their issues.
