Jigar movie review: Praveen Tej in action mode; but film is flat and unimaginative

Jigar movie story: Jeeva (Praveen Tej) is a loan recovery agent for a motor vehicle financier, who is more than happy to land a few punches to get to his target. Turns out, Jeeva had a violent past that he’d left behind for a life of relative quiet. But he’s drawn back into it, when he gets word of the death of a friend and heads back home.
While there, he chances upon Raksha (Vijayashree Kalburgi), and is instantly smitten. But can their romance flourish amid Jeeva’s ongoing tussles with his boss’ business rival?
Jigar movie review: When Praveen Tej took up Jigar, his motivation was to have a stab at a film that’s far more commercial, in terms of the action content, than his earlier works. A film that would give him a breather from the routine love stories he’d been doing, even though the core of Jigar was also a love story.
For what it is worth, Praveen gets to do a fair share of stunts – he kicks, punches, somersaults and does a lot more. The problem with that is that the actor does what pretty much every hero worth his salt is also doing and there’s really nothing setting him apart from dime a dozen others.
It doesn’t help that Suri Kunder’s script has nothing much for the actor to work with. For someone who decides to become a local businessman’s henchman out of no particular compulsion, Jeeva is quite remorseless after taking a few lives. To the extent that he convinces Raksha that his love for her should trump all other red flags about their relationship. At core level, Jeeva is still a good human being, or so we are told.
Yash Shetty, as the main antagonist Malpe Munna walks from the set of one of his films into Jigar and does pretty much what he does in all of them. He schemes against the hero, trades a few punches, etc. – there’s literally no effort to try and make him an interesting villain. The rest of the cast, including Bala Rajawadi and Vinaya Prasad, among others, have precious little to do.
Jigar movie verdict: Jigar is yet another run-of-the-mill actioner-romantic drama that offers nothing new and is rather unimaginative.
