The influence of a compelling sports biopic drama is unparalleled. It often presents a quintessential underdog narrative, showcasing the protagonist's triumph over adversity. However, in recent years, the genre appears to have become somewhat oversaturated. Viewers can often anticipate plot developments well in advance, easily foreseeing dramatic moments based on the camera's lingering close-ups. Unfortunately, these issues are evident in the latest Prime Video release, Unstoppable, which chronicles the remarkable true story of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with a single leg.

The premise

Unstoppable is undeniably engaging and ultimately delivers a significant emotional impact. It possesses all the elements necessary for a remarkable entry in its genre; however, it often becomes excessively formulaic, preventing the narrative from fully developing. This film marks the directorial debut of William Goldenberg, an Oscar-winning editor known for his work on Argo, and is produced by Ben Affleck. It showcases a powerful lead performance by Jharrel Jerome as Anthony, complemented by a strong supporting role from Jennifer Lopez as his mother, Judy. Nevertheless, the film seems overly focused on making an impression, lacking the depth needed to enrich these characters beyond their superficial portrayals.

The narrative begins with Anthony's final years in high school, where he stands out with his impressive wrestling skills. His mother is a steadfast supporter of his ambitions, and his coach, played by Michael Peña, encourages his aspirations. However, at home, he faces the challenges posed by his abusive stepfather, portrayed by Bobby Cannavale, which heightens his anxieties regarding his future. He grapples with the decision of accepting a full college scholarship at Drexel or pursuing his dreams at Iowa, a place he believes is home to the best wrestlers. Throughout his journey, he encounters coach Shawn Charles, played by Don Cheadle, whose guidance inspires Anthony to strive for greater achievements.

What works

The tone and texture of Unstoppable are distinctly formulaic and monotonous, suggesting that the film intentionally aims to convey an uplifting narrative in a manner reminiscent of a Wikipedia entry. The scenes set in Anthony's home are challenging, prompting a montage sequence to follow, after which the narrative returns to the house for further insights through a brief flashback. This conventional technique does not enhance the material in any meaningful way.

Nevertheless, the film progresses and succeeds in various segments, largely due to the dedicated performances of its cast. Jharrel delivers an intense and physical portrayal, with his relationship with his mother serving as the emotional heart of the film. Lopez makes a concerted effort to elevate her scenes, despite the somewhat exaggerated dialogue, and largely achieves this goal. If the 2019 film Hustlers was not sufficient evidence, Unstoppable serves as another reminder that Lopez possesses significant acting talent; she simply requires more compelling scripts to showcase her abilities.

Final thoughts

Although the conclusion is foreseeable, Unstoppable succeeds in reaching it with a degree of grace and emotional depth. The wrestling sequences are expertly choreographed and filmed, despite the overly dramatic score occasionally detracting from the experience. Unstoppable is characterized by its loudness and lack of subtlety, often undermined by its presumptuous tone. However, the film's subject matter is both revealing and poignant, ultimately allowing it to resonate with audiences through its authenticity. It proves to be quite impactful and stirring. What it needed was a bit more thoughtfulness, a brief moment to accompany the protagonist as he confronts numerous challenges. Observing him is, in many respects, a form of empathy.
