Get-Set Baby Movie Review: A Confused Narrative Fails to Make an Impact

Get-Set Baby plot: Despite the initial reluctance of patients to consult a male gynaecologist, IVF specialist Dr. Arjun Balakrishnan's expertise has established him as one of the most esteemed physicians in the State. However, alongside his aspirations, his ego also inflates, resulting in challenges in both his personal and professional spheres.

Get-Set Baby review: In 2024, director Sooraj Tom's film Vishesham explored the pertinent issue of a couple's challenges during fertility treatment. The film's sensitive portrayal and emotional resonance struck a chord with many viewers who have experienced similar struggles in their quest to conceive. In Get-Set Baby, director Vinay Govind, along with writers Rajesh YV and Anoop Ravindran, presents a narrative set within maternity hospitals, viewed through the lens of an ambitious and talented physician, Dr. Arjun Radhakrishnan, portrayed by Unni Mukundan.

The distinction between the two films lies in the experiences of the patients and doctors; one film is rich in emotional depth, while the other is more pragmatic, concentrating on the completion of the process. This aspect is similarly reflected in Get-Set Baby. Although the film culminates in an emotional peak, the preceding journey lacks engagement, primarily due to the writing.

The narrative introduces Dr. Arjun, a gynaecologist specializing in IVF, who faces challenges in attracting patients due to their biases. The writers effectively portray his empathetic nature in his interactions with women. However, as his ambitions soar, the film undermines this portrayal, depicting him as a ruthless individual who values fame and wealth above the well-being of his patients and colleagues. The swift nature of this transformation diminishes the audience's investment in Dr. Arjun, even as the filmmakers attempt to inject humour into his personal life. This disconnect ultimately detracts from the film's overall impact.

The primary issue with Get-Set Baby lies in its insubstantial plot, which revolves around a prominent IVF specialist who is in denial about his own infertility. This theme is prolonged throughout the film, leading viewers to question the narrative's significance, particularly given that it centres on an expert who is unwilling to confront his own limitations. There were certainly more innovative approaches to explore this concept; however, the writers instead depict a perplexed individual. It is evident that some thought was given to the subject, as Dr. Arjun engages in a discussion with Chemban Vinod Jose’s assertive character regarding these matters early in the film, which only adds to the audience's confusion.

That said, the film does feature commendable moments, albeit they arrive too late in the storyline. These instances occur when Dr. Arjun recognizes the gravity of his responsibilities as a physician and faces a pivotal decision that jeopardizes his reputation, which he had been striving to uphold.

Unni Mukundan delivers a commendable performance as Dr. Arjun, making a notable effort to exude charm; however, the writing fails to render the character sufficiently endearing. Nikhila Vimal, portraying Dr. Arjun’s wife, has a significant moment where she challenges his approach to fatherhood. The characters played by Surabhi Lakshmi and Sudeesh effectively illustrate the experiences of patients undergoing fertility treatments, although there are also some lacklustre attempts to depict celebrity surrogacy and its associated difficulties.

The tone of Get-Set Baby is reminiscent of the atmosphere found in OB-GYN wards or maternity clinics. Sam CS’s upbeat music is largely forgettable, with the exception of the track "Maname Alolam."

Get-Set Baby verdict: Even if you are in the mood for a breezy family drama, this Unni Mukundan and Nikhila Vimal-starrer is neither pregnant with emotions nor laughs.
