Gangers Movie Story:

In a little town, a school girl disappears, prompting teacher Sujitha (Catherine Tresa) to file a report to locate her. An officer is tasked with going undercover. In the meantime, we observe Singaram, the school's physical training instructor, longing for Sujitha, as he faces competition from a new PT teacher, Saravanan (Sundar C). However, this quickly evolves into a heist comedy, where a cast of characters joins forces to steal large amounts of cash that are hoarded by three gangster brothers who dominate the town.

Gangers Movie Review:

There is a saying, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. This perfectly applies to Sundar C’s movies, which are undoubtedly commercial successes. His films may not be regarded as strong examples of outstanding filmmaking (excluding Anbe Sivam here), but they cannot be overlooked either. Sundar C clearly comprehends the impact of an engaging narrative and captivating screenplay on a film, even if it may lack in story depth. And that is precisely what turns Sundar C’s films into crowd pleasers. There is something valuable to take away; it may not be the story or any particular elements, but rather the overall sensation that the film evokes in you. Gangers is no exception. It is a movie that shouldn't be scrutinized too deeply, but rather one to enjoy for the humor it provides in segments.

The director, who has just enjoyed success with his recent films Aranmanai 4 and Madha Gaja Raja, understands the moments that can please the audience. If Santhanam was the highlight in Madha Gaja Raja, it is now Vadivelu, who returns to his classic comedic role. There's no reward for guessing he portrays teacher Singaram, who has a desire for a female teacher and views Saravanan as his romantic competitor. You might start to lose track of political correctness in this film, right from the outset when Singaram warns Saravanan that Sujitha is his ‘property’. However, moving forward, Gangers takes its time in the first half to develop how the titular group unites for their mission. And as the second half kicks off, Sundar C ensures his screenplay shifts into high gear, hitting all the right notes.

In a time when movies draw on nostalgic value and creators exploit old films as highlights, it is nearly forgivable for Sundar C to pay tribute to himself with a movie theater's interior adorned with posters from his filmography; including Anbe Sivam, Coffee with Kadhal, and Kalakalappu. Actually, the movie being screened is Madha Gaja Raja, and there is a line that provides a satisfying rationale, supporting the storyline. Additionally, if it weren't for all these, a surprising cameo and unexpected name dropping are also present, but they feel subtle and organic to the story.

In Gangers, it is clear that Sundar C has refreshing moments. Nevertheless, it's not a film that is entirely fulfilling. There are sections where the humor feels old-fashioned and obsolete. Vadivelu, who returns as a comedian after a significant break, delivers a few witty remarks. You can see the classic comedian within him, as his style hasn’t changed much. It is still the same old yearning for a fair-skinned heroine, getting ensnared by thugs, and sometimes serving as the group's sacrificial goat or the ringmaster of fools. But the question remains, is he as effective as he once was in Winner or London, the very same Sundar C movies? That discussion is reserved for another occasion.

Gangers Movie Verdict:

Gangers shares similarities with Sundar C's films. It relies on commercial elements, features a high climactic ending, and includes a comedy of errors that enhances it. However, the film remains disorganized in parts, and it takes time to prepare the scene. There is a distinct Sundar C influence, one that is impossible to overlook, but also one that does not pass with distinction either.
