Snow White made its debut in Los Angeles on Saturday, with stars Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler present at the event. Despite earlier reports suggesting a lack of chemistry between them, the two actresses appeared to be in good spirits, smiling and posing for photographs on the red carpet. Initial reviews of the film have begun to circulate on social media, and early indications suggest that this Disney live-action adaptation could be a success.
Initial Reviews of Snow White
The early reviews have been predominantly positive, with particular acclaim for Rachel Zegler's performance in the lead role. Katcy Stephens from Variety remarked, “Rachel Zegler is a shining supernova in #SnowWhite, beautifully embodying the graceful, gentle nature of the original Disney princess. It’s a visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”
Praise for Rachel Zegler
Ash Crossan from Screen Rant commended the actor's vocal performance, stating, “Although the narrative may be somewhat disjointed, #SnowWhite is genuinely delightful! The themes resonate effectively, the animals are charming, and Rachel Zegler's captivating voice is remarkable. It nearly brought me to tears, and I have never cried in my life.”
Matt DeGroot of CrookedMedia acknowledged the negative attention the film has received, remarking, “In spite of being criticized online, Disney’s remake of Snow White is largely a success! Rachel Zegler shines as a star, (most of) the new songs are catchy and beautifully executed, and the visual aesthetics are rich and vibrant. Gal Gadot's gowns are stunning.”
I was initially concerned, but I must say that Snow White embodies the essence of DISNEY MAGIC! This film is likely to become a favorite among many viewers of live-action adaptations, according to another review.
Snow White is an American musical fantasy film helmed by director Marc Webb, featuring a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. This live-action reinterpretation draws inspiration from Walt Disney Productions' 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which is based on the Brothers Grimm's 1812 fairy tale. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on March 21, 2025.
What controversies have arisen?
The backlash began in 2021 with the announcement of Zegler, a Latina actress, cast as Snow White—a character from a German fairy tale known for being "the fairest of them all."
This decision was met with criticism from some fans and conservative commentators, who labeled it as "woke."
In a now-deleted tweet, Zegler, an actress of Colombian and Polish heritage, stated, "yes i am snow white No i am not bleaching my skin for the role."
However, the criticism intensified within Disney's dedicated fan community when Zegler appeared to make disparaging remarks about the 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was Disney's inaugural feature-length animated film.
Zegler referred to the cherished original as "weird," citing that Snow White's romantic interest is "a guy who literally stalks her." To further complicate matters for Disney, Zegler has concluded social media posts with "Free Palestine," while Gadot, who portrays the Evil Queen, has publicly supported her home country of Israel.
