Daredevil: Born Again - Review

Who could have predicted that Daredevil would not only be revived but also receive an entire series dedicated to him after Charlie Cox stored away the costume seven years ago following the third season of the Netflix series? It has taken nearly a decade and numerous discarded concepts to bring him back and honour his legacy, culminating in the new series titled Daredevil: Born Again. While opinions on the latest Marvel offerings vary, there is a consensus that they often feel like products of the same mould, existing within a shared cinematic universe. In contrast, you can enjoy Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse with your OTTplay Premium Subscription on Sonyliv.

However, the shows have been thriving in a distinctly different direction. Born Again has entered this cinematic ecosystem and has demonstrated to the entire universe what it means to step outside the confines of the bubble, both for audiences and creators alike. Perhaps the executives needed to take a longer look at the situation for it to resonate deeply and endure over time.

Developed by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, along with a team of seven writers including Dario Scardapane, Jill Blankenship, Jesse Wigutow, Heather Bellson, David Feige, Grainne Godfree, and Thomas Wong, Daredevil: Born Again immediately distinguishes itself from the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has become an extensive framework in need of refinement. The series consciously opts not to be the one to mend it, which is a commendable strategy. Instead, it takes the opportunity to explore the diversity within that framework, presenting a narrative where the superhero perspective is central, rather than the world merely observing a superhero.

In this narrative, individuals are not mere background characters who vanish when the protagonists engage in dialogue; they play a crucial role by voicing their thoughts on unfolding events. The presence of a vigilante affects them as much as it does the Mayor, and the show ensures that a variety of viewpoints are represented. New York City is vividly portrayed in Daredevil: Born Again, infusing the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a level of authenticity that has been absent for quite some time. While Daredevil is inherently more grounded than other intellectual properties, the series opens up exciting possibilities for future endeavours.

The central conflict revolves around Kingpin/Wilson Fisk's desire to eliminate masked vigilantes, regardless of their affiliations. However, the writing skillfully weaves in additional layers, depicting a vigilante grappling with grief and remorse, a Mayor burdened by a shadowy past, and a marital relationship strained by infidelity during his absence. Furthermore, the narrative addresses police brutality, which the Mayor now tacitly endorses. Themes of trauma and mental health, along with various complexities, render this show particularly compelling.

For example, Daredevil: Born Again does not rush toward the climax of any scenario. Instead, it allows the characters to develop, immersing them in the traumatic events they experience before ultimately reaching the conclusion. The fact that Daredevil is vulnerable and lacks supernatural abilities adds a unique dimension to his narrative. He is not invincible; rather, he excels as a vigilante, meaning that every injury he sustains has a real impact on him, with no magical means to restore his strength. The universe of Daredevil is rich and offers a wealth of opportunities for exploration.

The characters are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each one contributing significantly to the overarching narrative. Charlie Cox could portray Daredevil for decades, and his performance would remain flawless. Similarly, Vincent D'Onofrio has so thoroughly embodied Kingpin that it has become challenging to separate him from the role. The supporting cast also delivers outstanding performances. Daredevil: Born Again serves as an exemplary model of how a well-crafted script can harmonise with a talented ensemble of actors.

Nevertheless, a few elements did not resonate well. Firstly, Matthew's reaction of relaxing immediately after being shot near his heart seems implausible. Secondly, he discovers that Muse has drawn Heather Glenn by merely touching the sketch. On a positive note, the finale is commendable as it avoids a quick resolution, instead leaving viewers in suspense for the upcoming season.

Daredevil: Born Again Review - Final Verdict

The Marvel Cinematic Universe needed to break free from its confines and gain a fresh perspective. Born Again accomplishes this effectively. It is not a series that should be confined to a larger universe; it possesses a unique strength and depth that allows it to thrive independently. This is what both television and its audience truly deserve.

All the episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on JioHotstar in India. Stay tuned to Mobile Masala for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
