Crazxy review: Sohum Shah’s Thriller Fizzles Out with a Forgettable Finale
1 month ago | 5 Views
Cast: Sohum Shah, Unnati Sarana
Director: Girish Kohli
Rating: 2.5/5
In the course of Crazxy's approximately 90-minute duration, there is a singular moment that truly captivates. The protagonist, a doctor, finds himself in a desolate location, simultaneously changing a car tire, performing a virtual surgery, and conversing with his daughter's abductor. This scene is both exhilarating and tense, as he desperately attempts to rectify the various crises in his life. Regrettably, this intensity is not reflected in the film's overall narrative before or after this moment.
Crafted by writer and director Girish Kohli, the film features Sohum Shah, who recently returned following the re-release of his well-received horror film Tumbbad. Crazxy tells the story of Abhimanyu, a doctor who has divorced his wife due to the societal stigma surrounding their daughter Vedica's Down syndrome. As he travels to negotiate a medical negligence settlement with the family of a deceased patient, he receives alarming news: his daughter has been kidnapped. Initially dismissing the call as a prank, he soon realizes the gravity of the situation when he learns that the ransom demand is ₹5 crores, precisely the amount he was carrying to silence the patient’s family. What actions will he take next? Is there a deeper conspiracy at play? The film unfolds to reveal the answers.
Crazxy starts off in a rather conventional manner. The storyline lacks originality, resembling many other films that revolve around a race against time. The jarring background score, if intended to irritate, succeeds admirably. A fitting description of the narrative leading up to the intermission would be that it evokes no emotional response whatsoever. It is an unusual sensation, as there is neither excitement nor fear, which is indeed crazxy.
The interval occurs relatively early in the film, and following a lackluster beginning, there is little enthusiasm as the audience settles in for the second half. Fortunately, the film gains momentum, yet aside from the previously mentioned sequence, it lacks substantial content. The conclusion abruptly transitions from a thriller to a segment intended to evoke emotional responses. However, this shift is not as impactful as anticipated, as it veers into melodrama. While the major twist is unexpected, its effect is ultimately disappointing.
On a positive note, the film boasts impressive visuals. The cinematography by Sunil Borkar and Kuldeep Mamania is notably constrained, as most scenes are filmed within Abhimanyu’s car, effectively conveying a sense of tension. Additionally, the supporting cast is represented solely through their voices, creating an auditory cacophony that seems intentional on the part of the filmmakers.
The soundtrack primarily consists of reimagined classics, with the exception of "Abhimanyu" from the film Inquilaab, performed by Kishore Kumar, which aligns well with the narrative.
In summary, Crazxy presents a few redeeming qualities. However, it falls short of being a captivating experience, containing several inconsistencies throughout. The film is currently showing in theaters.
