Crazxy: A Promising Thriller That Falls Short of Its Potential

Cast: Sohum Shah, Unnati Sharma
Director: Girish Kohli
Runtime: 93 minutes
Rating: 2/5
Sohum Shah, recognized for his unique roles in films like Tumbbad and Ship of Theseus, collaborates with director Girish Kohli for Crazxy. The storyline, which revolves around a father torn between rescuing his daughter and meeting a financial obligation, has the potential to be intense, but the end result comes off as a somewhat entertaining yet forgettable experience.
The plot centers on Dr. Abhimanyu Sood (Sohum Shah), a doctor who’s carrying Rs 5 crore intended for an out-of-court settlement with the family of a deceased patient due to his negligence. On his way to the hospital, he gets a call from an unknown individual claiming to have kidnapped his daughter, Vedica, and demanding the same Rs 5 crore as ransom. Abhimanyu, already grappling with his past relationship with his daughter, faces the tough choice of paying the ransom or adhering to his legal responsibilities. This setup could have led to a deeper emotional and moral struggle, but the execution doesn’t quite deliver the gripping experience it promises.
Girish Kohli, known for his work on films like Kesari and Mom, introduces an interesting conflict, but the screenplay often feels predictable. The plot lacks the depth and intricacy needed to fully engage the audience. The twists, which should have been the film's highlights, are fairly foreseeable, and the overall story doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the table. Consequently, Crazxy seems like a missed chance to create a truly memorable thriller.
Sohum Shah puts in a solid effort to carry the film, and his performance is one of the few standout elements. He convincingly portrays the conflicted father, but even his skills can’t completely lift a script that feels lackluster. The supporting cast, including Tinnu Anand as the kidnapper, delivers decent performances but aren’t given enough material to make a significant impact.
Crazxy doesn’t quite hit the mark on the technical side. While the editing by Sanyukta Kaza and Rythem Lath is sharp, the pacing and story flow are pretty standard. At just over 90 minutes, the film wraps up quickly, which is nice, but it also means there’s not much time for character growth or emotional depth. The cinematography by Sunil Ramkrishna Borkar and Kuldeep Mamania is decent, but it doesn’t really ramp up the tension or excitement. The music from Vishal Bhardwaj and lyrics by Gulzar are nice enough, but they fade into the background instead of enhancing the film.
Overall, Crazxy is a decent thriller that ticks the boxes for a casual watch but doesn’t really stand out. With a predictable storyline and missed chances for deeper emotional moments, it ends up being just an average film that doesn’t fully deliver on its intriguing premise. Sohum Shah gives a solid performance, and while the film isn’t boring, it doesn’t bring anything fresh or thrilling to the table. It’s the kind of movie you might watch once but probably won’t feel the urge to revisit.
