Buddy Story

Pallavi(Gayatri Bharadwaj) is an Air Traffic Control officer who suffers a major accident. The doctor(Ajmal Amir) along with his crew sends Gayatri into a coma so that he can sell her body parts in Hong Kong. While all this happens, Gayatri's soul enters a teddy bear and reaches the home of a pilot Aditya(Allu Sirish) who shares a past with Gayatri. The rest of the story is as to how the teddy bear and Aditya head to Hong Kong to save the body of Gayatri.

Buddy Review

Even though the makers of Buddy have been shouting from the roof top that their film is not a remake of the Arya starrer Teddy, the basic plot remains the same. A few changes have been made to the Telugu film and the premise looks interesting. Apart from this aspect, there is not one factor in Buddy that holds your attention.

The presence of a teddy bear will impress a few kids but the rest of the story is bland. A few scenes that generate comedy between Allu Sirish and the teddy have been handled well in the film. Sam Anton has directed the film and his narrative lacks basic punch. A soul entering a cute teddy bear looks cool on paper but the manner in which all this showcased in the film lacks any depth.

The silly presentation makes things even more disappointing. The teddy bear is given a few lines that will resonate with the kids but the rest of the narrative is predictable. There are hardly any twists in the film and the manner in which the teddy bear takes way too many liberties looks over the top.

Buddy starts with the love angle of Allu Sirish and Gayatri Bharadwaj, and this aspect of their romance happens through wireless communication as Sirish is a pilot and Gayatri is an Air Traffic Control officer. This entire episode is boring and creates a disinterest right away in the narrative.

Coming to the performances, Allu Sirish is very good in his role and carries the film on his shoulders. He has a natural flair for comedy and that is showcased through all his scenes with the teddy bear. Sirish looks stylish and has also done action in a very convincing manner in Buddy.

Ali gets a good role after a long gap and he is very good. Ajamal Amir is not at all impressive in his role and hams for no reason. IN a way, he is miscast in the film. Prisha Singh is okay in her role and Mukesh Rishi was over the top. The production values of Buddy are just about okay. The Tamil flavor in the original is also carried into the remake.

The character of Buddy, the teddy bear has been designed well and whenever it appears on screens, things look a bit better. The VFX done is tacky but the production design is very good. The editing is decent and the dialogues were hilarious especially those written for the teddy bear.

In a way, Buddy looks outdated for the most part. Allu Sirish is the only solace of the film, but after a while, he, too, cannot do anyth ing to save the film from sinking. One gets a feeling that he needs to pick better scripts to stay relevant in the industry.

Buddy Verdict

On the whole, Buddy has an interesting premise, and the teddy bear angle is fun. But the rest of the narration, comedy, action and presentation fail to engage the audience for the most part.
