Story:

Korea lies in ruins following World War II and its liberation from Japanese rule. The streets are filled with people, prompting Koo-kee (played by Song Joong-ki) and his family to relocate to the United States. However, they must first make a stop in Bogotá, Colombia, a city notorious for its criminal activity. This sets the stage for the emergence of a future crime lord.

Review:

Set in 1997, amidst the chaos of war, we encounter a young Song Joong-ki. The narrative transitions to Bogotá, Spain, where he is deeply concerned about his family's well-being.

Initially intended as a gateway to the United States, he becomes ensnared in Colombia while attempting to address a minor theft, which becomes significant for him as his important documents are stolen.

Consequently, Koo-kee is compelled to immerse himself in the criminal underworld. While the influence of Spanish culture is palpable, the grip of crime is even more pronounced. Before long, our protagonist becomes proficient in Spanish as well.

The narrative begins with Kook-kee's journey as a transport worker, ultimately revealing a fiery and passionate individual determined to establish his place in a vast and unpredictable world. He embodies the essence of Vincenzo during his challenging times—impatient and prone to errors, yet resilient in his pursuit of improvement and progress. As an adult, Kook-kee mirrors Vincenzo's character, wielding significant influence and making strategic decisions in response to the circumstances he faces. This is the reason for the respect garnered by Vincenzo, and it is likely that Kook-kee will evoke similar admiration.

Kook-kee's charisma remains consistently captivating. From his exceptional driving abilities to poignant interactions with his father, Joong-ki excels in his portrayal of Kook-kee.

Lee Hee-joon, portraying Soo-yeong, captivates audiences with the mystery he embodies. He serves as Koo-kee's 'hyung,' yet the nature of their profession means that circumstances can shift unexpectedly. This fluidity is also evident in Kook-kee's evolving relationship with Kwon Hye-hyo's Park Jang-soo.

Although the narrative unfolds at a leisurely pace and the historical context may sometimes feel distant, Bogotá consistently manages to engage viewers. This is largely attributed to the performance of Joong-ki.

In conclusion, Bogotá: City of the Lost is a film that pays tribute to Song Joong-ki's talent as an actor. While the pacing may occasionally feel sluggish and disorienting, it is his compelling character that stands out. Should there be a spin-off focusing on the lead character's descent into crime, it would likely resemble Bogotá: City of the Lost.
