Baapu Story

The narrative unfolds in a quaint town located in Telangana. Mallanna (Brahmaji), a financially struggling farmer, finds himself overwhelmed by debt. In a desperate bid to alleviate his financial burdens, he devises a sinister plan to murder his elderly father in order to collect the insurance payout. The film then explores whether Mallanna will follow through with this horrific act and the subsequent repercussions on his life.

Baapu Review

Baapu is both written and directed by Daya, who selects a compelling theme set against the backdrop of rural Telangana, highlighting the struggles of farmers encumbered by debt and driven to take drastic actions for survival.

In this context, the director introduces a subtle element of suspense, which is woven into the storyline. Nevertheless, despite the captivating premise, the film falls short in delivering emotional resonance.

The moral conflict of contemplating the murder of a parent presents a significant opportunity for emotional exploration, yet the director does not delve into this aspect sufficiently. While the attempts on the father's life and the ensuing escape sequences are engaging, the fundamental emotions within the story remain inadequately developed.

Nonetheless, certain scenes effectively capture the audience's attention. The father's character plays a pivotal role in the film, and the narrative gains traction whenever he appears. The humor derived from his character is skillfully executed, maintaining viewer engagement. Sudhakar Reddy, known for his work in Balagam, delivers a commendable performance, captivating the audience with his portrayal.

The latter part of the film introduces a subplot involving a concealed treasure that ultimately aids the family, adding an element of intrigue. However, the climax appears hurried and could have benefited from a more intense treatment.

Additionally, the romantic subplot featuring the lead characters seems superfluous and disrupts the narrative flow. The inclusion of two songs featuring the couple could have been omitted to enhance the pacing of the film.

Despite its runtime of only two hours and ten minutes, the film occasionally feels prolonged and sluggish. The rationale behind the family's attempts to assassinate their own relative lacks clarity and coherence.

The exploration of guilt within the narrative could have been more profound, which would have enhanced the film's emotional resonance. Regrettably, this aspect remains underdeveloped, resulting in Baapu feeling incomplete and lacking in several areas.

Regarding performances, Brahmaji is well-cast in Baapu and delivers a commendable portrayal. Transitioning from his usual comedic roles, he successfully embodies a serious character.

Senior actress Amani portrays his wife, contributing significantly to the narrative with her powerful performance. Dhanya Balakrishna, as the female lead, effectively embodies the role of a village belle, enriching the story with her intense acting.

The actor portraying Brahmaji’s son does not leave a significant impression. In contrast, Racha Ravi shines in a well-defined negative role.

The film boasts impressive production values, with cinematography that effectively captures the essence of the village setting. However, the editing, particularly in the first half, appears weak, while the production design is executed well.

The film's central narrative is robust, providing ample opportunities for emotional and thrilling moments. Nevertheless, the execution does not meet expectations, leaving the film in a state of uncertainty.

Baapu Verdict

Overall, Baapu presents a rustic village drama with a compelling core concept. However, the emotional depth is lacking, and the thrill elements are not fully realized, rendering it a subpar viewing experience for the weekend.
