Alappuzha Gymkhana story: After not passing their class 12 exams, five friends decide to take up boxing to earn some grace marks and secure their college spots. They start off strong by winning their district matches, but when they reach the State-level competition, they realize their skills aren't quite enough. Still, they’re determined to give it their all.

Alappuzha Gymkhana review: ‘Vibe padam’ is the term young people use for films that resonate with their emotions. Director Khalid Rahman’s earlier film, Thallumaala, fits this description well, blending sharp editing, action, and compelling storytelling. However, Alappuzha Gymkhana takes a different approach. It may not be as fast-paced, but it definitely maintains its energetic vibe. With a youthful cast full of charm and a storyline that keeps delivering surprises and excitement, the filmmaker has crafted another hit that’s bound to attract young audiences to the cinemas.

The film revolves around a group of teenagers who, after flunking their Class 12 exams, decide to take up boxing. Within a few months, and with a bit of luck, they find themselves competing at the State level, fully aware that their opponents have the advantage. However, this isn’t your typical underdog story where a ragtag team of misfits fights their way to success. Instead, it offers a more heartwarming and charming take on the narrative, driven by the relationships among the teens and their aspirations for the competition.

Even if you haven't experienced such competitions yourself, you'll easily connect with these teens, cheering them on as they stumble and rise again, and you'll be charmed by their support for one another. The screenplay, crafted by Rahman and Sreeni Saseendran, features witty and lively dialogues by Ratheesh Ravi, creating moments that draw the audience into the group’s journey. Rahman deserves credit for consistently achieving this, especially in ensemble films like Unda, Thallumaala, and now Alappuzha Gymkhana, where he makes each character relatable and engaging enough for viewers to invest in their stories.

Naslen shines as Jojo Thomas, the charismatic and lively leader of the group, giving us a glimpse into the lives and interactions of these teens. However, the film doesn’t overlook the contributions of the other cast members. Whether it’s Baby Jean, Sandeep Pradeep, Shiva Hariharan, Shon Joy, Ganapathi, Karthik, Franco Francis, Anagha Maya Ravi, or Lukman Avaran, each one plays a crucial role, making the film an enjoyable ride from beginning to end.

While the story centers around boxing and features plenty of matches, it’s not your typical sports film that delves into the main character's personal journey, so you might not feel that emotional connection. But that’s not the goal of Rahman in Alappuzha Gymkhana; it leans more towards being a fun buddy sports comedy. The boxing scenes, particularly near the conclusion, are enhanced by Jimshi Khalid’s smooth cinematography, showcasing a noticeable shift as the stadium fills up and the atmosphere intensifies. The final fight scene is the perfect finishing touch.

Vishnu Vijay’s music brings a refreshing vibe, enhancing an already lively film edited by the late Nishadh Yusuf.

Alappuzha Gymkhana verdict: With delightful performances from its young cast, this lively sports comedy is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages and might just be one of the most heartwarming underdog tales we've seen lately.
