Aghathiyaa (Jiiva), hailing from a modest background, has risen to the position of art director within the film industry. Aghathiyaa can be succinctly described as a film that transforms a movie set into a frightening house and ultimately a haunted palace. This production is replete with special effects and animations, captivating viewers at nearly every paused frame. The film showcases a vibrant array of colors and graphics, appealing to diverse tastes that vary by age group. For those with a child-like wonder who revel in visual spectacles and a continuous display of colours, Aghathiyaa serves as an enjoyable experience. Conversely, for viewers who seek depth, logic, and a screenplay that transcends mere aesthetic appeal, the film may come across as a superficial narrative contrasting English and Siddha medicine.

From the outset, Aghathiyaa presents a multitude of elements. The protagonist, hailing from a modest background, is drawn to the arts. As he matures into a dedicated production designer, willing to invest his resources into the film sets, the first half of the film tests the audience's patience with numerous jump scares and camera techniques designed to convince viewers of the palace's haunted nature. The narrative shifts in the second half, focusing on the conflict between local and foreign medical practices. Arjun Sarja portrays a highly skilled physician capable of curing ailments through Siddha medicine, exuding sophistication from his practice while interacting with the elite of the French rulers, often seen in attire that distances him from local culture. The film's failure to name a Siddha doctor as Siddharthan reflects its struggle to maintain a cohesive storyline. While it incorporates elements of horror, political commentary, fantasy, and a classic good versus evil climax, Aghathiyaa ultimately delivers a lacklustre experience for those in search of a more engaging narrative.

The film Aghathiyaa predominantly focuses on flashbacks and the period of French colonial rule in Pondicherry, yet it is burdened with numerous superfluous elements. In an era where audience attention spans are diminishing and intricate details are expected to yield significant payoffs, Aghathiyaa dedicates excessive time to creating an opulent setting that lacks substance. A notable example is the character of a French princess named Jacquline Poovizhi, whose name is derived from her mother’s role in translating the Bible into Tamil during the colonial period. However, this detail does not enhance the narrative, which remains stagnant. The film is rife with instances that contribute to its superficiality and sluggish pacing. Furthermore, the musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja does not stand out, aside from a background score that attempts to depict the struggle between good and evil. Additionally, the use of Mocobot camera shots in Aghathiyaa can be described as a significant misapplication, failing to enhance the overall viewing experience.
