Woman’s Stunning Glow-Up After Quitting Toxic Job: ‘My Hair Was Falling, Skin Was Grey’
17 days ago | 5 Views
UK content creator Lauren Smith utilizes her Instagram platform to promote body positivity and foster a positive atmosphere. However, there was a period when Lauren, who consistently shares insights on 'plus-size fashion and body confidence,' found herself in a detrimental work environment. In a post dated March 6, she discussed how departing from this 'toxic job' not only enhanced her mental health but also positively influenced her physical appearance.
Before and after glow-up videos of Lauren
She posted a video montage featuring clips from March 2023, where she appeared visibly distressed and even shed tears while highlighting her 'swollen face.' In contrast, her recent videos showcase her looking radiant, with a glow that is unmistakable.
In a post titled 'That leaving a toxic job glow-up,' Lauren reflected on her transformation, stating, “The glow-up after leaving a toxic job, relationship, or living situation is real... no matter what your situation is, it is never too late to leave or to begin anew. I assure you.”
Witness her remarkable transformation for yourself:
'I felt sick with anxiety most days'
Lauren recounted her experiences over the past few years, stating, “The initial recordings date back to March 2023, during a time when I was truly struggling. The best way to express it is that my job was draining the joy and essence of my life. I felt devoid of worth, and ineffective, and believed that everyone was discussing me negatively and resented me. Most days, I was overwhelmed with anxiety. It was a constant trigger for various issues I prefer not to elaborate on, impacting every aspect of my existence…”
She further remarked, “I rarely ventured outside. My hygiene suffered as I didn’t shower as frequently as necessary. I engaged in binge eating. My hair began to thin, my complexion turned ashen, and my face was marred by swollen, painful eczema. My skin issues persisted because my immune system was under severe strain. I found myself crying every single day. My family and friends expressed significant concern for my well-being.”
Finding a new job wasn't easy, but she's happy now
She elaborated, "The process of applying for new positions is quite burdensome, yet my enthusiasm and happiness had diminished, compelling me to invest the limited effort and energy I had remaining. Ultimately, I secured an excellent new role where I feel valued, challenged, and supported, and I believe I am contributing to meaningful work. Although I had to accept a 20 per cent reduction in salary and take a step back in my career to make this change, there were several genuinely frightening months as a solo homeowner when I feared I might not be able to meet my financial obligations. Nevertheless, I would make the same choice again without hesitation. My joy, sparkle, and happiness have returned."
Lauren's advice to those trapped in a toxic environment or job: "While I cannot promise that your situation will be significantly better if it cannot worsen, what do you have to lose? I am sending you abundant love and good fortune! YOU CAN DO THIS!"
Stress can show on your face
It is important to recognize that each individual's body is unique, and the effects of stress reduction on one's appearance can differ from person to person. Nevertheless, by exiting a detrimental job or relationship and alleviating stress, you may observe enhancements in both your physical and mental health, resulting in a more vibrant and self-assured version of yourself.
In a January 2025 interview with HT City, Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, a senior dermatologist and consultant at Max Hospital in Saket, discussed how stress can manifest on the face. She explained that elevated cortisol levels not only impact physical health and emotional well-being but also influence one's appearance.
Dr Bhardwaj stated, “When cortisol levels rise, it stimulates excessive oil production, which can result in acne outbreaks. Additionally, it compromises the skin barrier, leading to dehydration, irritation, and increased sensitivity. Prolonged stress hampers collagen production, which accelerates the ageing process and makes fine lines and wrinkles more prominent.”
Simple but effective strategies to maintain healthy cortisol levels
Establish a regular sleep pattern and create a soothing nighttime routine.
Engaging in regular exercise is beneficial; however, be cautious of excessive training, as it may lead to increased stress levels.
Incorporate practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to soothe your nervous system.
Prioritize whole foods and ensure you do not skip meals to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Decline unnecessary obligations and allocate time for self-care.
