Mixing coffee with a protein shake for weight loss

First off, check out what Antonia shared in her Instagram video: “I just realized why I dropped 20 pounds so quickly — like in just three months. I've been having the same breakfast every morning, and today was the first time I had it in the afternoon... and now I don’t feel hungry at all.”

She continued, “Every single day, I start my morning with half iced coffee and half protein shake, which gives me 32 grams of protein and 200 calories. I feel full and not hungry. I’m only eating to meet my protein targets. Now, I can’t even finish my dinner. If you’re looking for something to curb your appetite, you might want to try a protein shake and a big jug of cold brew because that’s what worked for me.”

Is this something you should really pay attention to?

Mixing half iced coffee with half a protein shake can help curb your appetite, but it's important to maintain a balanced diet and lifestyle overall. Dr. Kiran Soni, who leads the nutrition and health department at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida, shared with HT Lifestyle that "losing weight isn't just about consuming protein; it's about providing your body with a balanced diet."

She added, “Focusing only on protein for weight loss and skipping meals isn't a healthy or sustainable method. While protein is essential for preserving muscle, boosting metabolism, and keeping you full, your body also requires carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals to function properly.”

Why the so-called weight loss beverage might pose some risks

Dr. Soni cautioned that skipping meals can result in nutrient shortages, decreased energy, and muscle deterioration over time. It might also slow your metabolism, making weight loss more challenging. She recommends, “Rather than missing meals, aim for a balanced diet that includes controlled portions of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to maintain energy levels and promote effective fat loss. Incorporate whole foods like lean meats, eggs, lentils, dairy, nuts, and seeds, along with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.”

She also pointed out that consuming excessive protein without enough fiber and hydration can cause digestive problems and stress the kidneys. “A more effective approach to weight loss involves portion control, mindful eating, and consistent physical activity. Instead of cutting out meals, prioritize balanced, nutrient-rich foods at regular intervals to keep your metabolism active and support your overall health. Achieving sustainable weight loss is about making lasting lifestyle changes, not seeking quick fixes,” Dr. Soni emphasized.
