Winter Wellness: Essential Tips for Cancer Patients to Stay Healthy in Cold Weather

For individuals undergoing cancer treatment, the winter months can present significant challenges. The cold temperatures may exacerbate discomfort, elevate the risk of infections, and intensify the side effects associated with treatment. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Kapil Goyal, a Consultant in Medical Oncology at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre in Niti Bagh, noted, “Patients with cancer often exist in a catabolic metabolic state, characterized by diminished reserves of fat, glucose, and muscle mass, which further hinders their ability to withstand cold temperatures. Additionally, many experience hormonal imbalances, rendering them more susceptible to feeling cold compared to those in good health.”

Cancer patients face heightened infection risks during winter

Dr. Goyal elaborated, “The immune system is compromised due to cancer therapies, making patients more vulnerable to respiratory infections such as influenza, colds, and pneumonia. The winter season sees a rise in respiratory infections caused by various viruses and bacteria, which can lead to cold and cough in the general population. However, cancer patients with weakened immunity are at an even greater risk of contracting these infections. The tendency to remain indoors in enclosed spaces during winter facilitates the circulation of viral particles, thereby increasing the likelihood of infection.”

For cancer patients, winter can be a difficult time.

Chemotherapy and increased cold sensitivity

For those battling cancer, the winter season can indeed be a challenging period. Chemotherapy and heightened sensitivity to cold are significant concerns. “Chemotherapy, an essential treatment for numerous cancer types, can markedly increase sensitivity to cold. It often inflicts damage on nerves and blood vessels, leading to reduced blood circulation and neuropathy—a condition characterized by pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities. In colder conditions, these neuropathic symptoms may intensify, complicating daily activities. Furthermore, chemotherapy can induce dehydration, fatigue, and anemia, which collectively heighten sensitivity to cold,” the oncologist emphasized.

Advice for cancer patients to maintain their health during the winter months:

The physician provided several recommendations for cancer patients to remain fit and healthy in colder weather:

Maintain physical activity: Participate in gentle indoor exercises to enhance blood circulation and retain body heat.

Dress appropriately: Wear multiple layers of warm, breathable materials, and prioritize the protection of extremities with gloves, hats, and socks.

Consume a nutritious diet: Emphasize iron-rich foods and warm beverages to bolster immune function and assist in managing anemia.

Ensure proper hydration: Drink ample water to keep mucous membranes hydrated and alleviate respiratory discomfort.

Utilize air purifiers and heating devices: Equip your living space with air purifiers to minimize airborne particles and heaters to ensure warmth and comfort.

Consider immunizations: Receiving vaccinations for influenza and pneumococcus can help reduce the risk of infections.

Limit exposure to illness: Keep a safe distance from individuals exhibiting symptoms of a cold or cough to lower the likelihood of infection.
