Winter Care Essentials: Tips to Keep Your Dog Warm and Cozy This Season
7 days ago | 5 Views
The frigid temperatures of winter compel us to gather closely and shiver, seeking comfort in blankets and warm woolen attire. However, we must also consider our dogs. Similar to humans, dogs experience the biting cold of winter and require adequate protection. By offering them appropriate care and warmth, you can help maintain their health and happiness during this season. In a discussion with HT, Dr. Deepak Saraswat, Head Veterinarian at Zigly, discusses the crucial aspects of winter care for dogs.
Winter Apparel
Winter apparel is essential for ensuring that dogs remain warm and comfortable, shielding them from the harshness of the winter chill, whether they are indoors or outdoors during walks. Dr. Deepak Saraswat emphasized that materials such as fleece, wool blends, or thermal cotton are optimal for dog sweaters, as they offer warmth, insulation, and comfort. Additionally, hypoallergenic fabrics like bamboo blends are recommended for dogs with sensitive skin.
Dr. Saraswat also advised the use of dog boots during winter outings, noting that "Dog boots are essential for safeguarding paws against frostbite, salt, and de-icing chemicals. It is advisable to choose waterproof, insulated boots equipped with anti-slip soles and adjustable straps to ensure a secure fit. Gradually introducing the boots indoors is important to avoid irritation or discomfort."
Regarding coats, Dr. Saraswat pointed out that small or short-haired breeds, such as Chihuahuas or Dachshunds, typically require full-body coats for enhanced warmth. Conversely, double-coated breeds like Huskies may find waterproof raincoats more beneficial, especially in snowy or slushy conditions.
Bedding and blanket
For cold winter evenings, it is crucial to provide your dog with warm bedding and blankets to ensure their comfort and protection. This arrangement also contributes to improved sleep quality.
Dr. Deepak Saraswat recommends opting for dog beds that are thickly padded and feature memory foam or orthopedic qualities to maximize warmth and comfort. He noted that "beds with raised edges are especially effective in retaining heat."
Additionally, he advised, “It is important to place the bed away from drafts, doors, or windows, and to avoid positioning it too close to heaters to mitigate the risk of overheating or burns. The bed should be situated in a warm yet secure location for the dog's well-being.”
Regarding blanket materials, Dr. Saraswat suggested using fleece, sherpa, or wool blankets. These materials are particularly suitable for winter as they are lightweight, cozy, and proficient at retaining heat. By thoughtfully selecting and arranging your dog’s bedding and blankets, you can ensure they enjoy a comfortable sleep during the winter nights.
Diet
Similar to the way we adapt our diets during winter to enhance immunity and maintain health, dogs also require dietary adjustments. Dr. Deepak Saraswat suggested incorporating foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon oil or flaxseed, along with antioxidants like carrots and blueberries to strengthen a dog's immune system. He emphasized that foods containing Vitamins E and C are beneficial for bolstering immunity.
Dr. Saraswat further elaborated on dietary modifications based on the size of the breed. He noted that “small breeds typically need higher-calorie diets in winter due to their rapid metabolism, whereas large breeds may benefit from glucosamine-rich foods to support joint health in colder conditions.”
Additionally, to ensure proper hydration for dogs, he recommended, “Provide lukewarm water and include moisture-rich foods such as wet food or broths in their meals.”
Fur care and grooming
Dr. Saraswat emphasized the importance of grooming practices during the winter season. He addressed several key components, ranging from brushing to bathing:
- Brushing: It is essential to brush your dog regularly, approximately two to three times a week, during winter to eliminate dead hair and evenly distribute natural oils for warmth. Depending on the breed of your dog, utilize appropriate grooming tools such as slicker brushes or undercoat rakes.
- Bathing: Employ lukewarm water and moisturizing shampoos formulated for winter care. After bathing, ensure that your pet is thoroughly dried with a towel or a pet-safe dryer set to a low heat, as wet fur can lead to chills.
- Paw care: After each walk, it is advisable to clean your dog's paws with a warm, damp cloth to remove any salt and debris, and to apply paw balm to prevent cracking and dryness.
