Why Dettol Might Be Hurting Your Wounds More Than Helping

During childhood, when you experienced a fall from your bicycle or scraped your knees, it was common for your parents or school personnel to apply antiseptic solutions such as Dettol or Savlon to your injuries to cleanse them and promote healing. Even as adults, many of us keep these antiseptics at home for emergencies. However, it may come as a surprise that applying them to wounds is not advisable.

In a podcast hosted by Raj Shamani on YouTube on April 1, dermatologist Dr. Manjot Marwah stated that Dettol should not be used on wounds or injuries. This revelation may be shocking, and even the health podcaster expressed surprise at the dermatologist's assertion. Let us explore her insights.

'Don't apply Dettol on wounds'

According to Dr. Manjot, no dermatologist recommends using Dettol to clean wounds or injuries. She emphasized, “You should cleanse the area with water. Dettol can cause a burning sensation on the wound, which may prolong the healing process.” When questioned about the widespread use of Dettol and Savlon in clinics and households across India, she clarified that this is a misconception. In fact, medical professionals typically use Betadine instead.

Dr. Manjot explained, "While it may have been common in schools to apply Dettol, a dermatologist would never use Dettol or Savlon for wound care."

Furthermore, the Mayo Clinic advises that the proper method for cleaning a wound involves rinsing it under running water to reduce the risk of infection. Afterward, gently wash the area surrounding the wound with soap, ensuring that soap does not enter the wound itself. It is also recommended to avoid using hydrogen peroxide or iodine.

How to avoid scarring

According to Dr. Samantha Ellis, a dermatologist, to prevent scarring, one should gently pat the wound dry and apply a thin layer of an unmedicated ointment, such as Vaseline, which is readily available at home. Following this, the area should be covered with a band-aid. Dr. Ellis shared these recommendations in an Instagram video. She emphasized that this procedure should be repeated every 24 hours until a thin layer of pink skin forms over the affected area. The dermatologist asserted that adhering to this after-care routine will render the resulting scar nearly invisible, as a new layer of skin regenerates over the injury.
