"Unveiling Anorexia's Hidden Roots: Anxiety Plays a Central Role Beyond Body Image and Food
1 month ago | 5 Views
Anorexia is a really serious eating disorder. It involves having a skewed body image and a deep fear of gaining weight, which causes people to eat less. Those dealing with this disorder often see themselves as overweight, even when they are actually very underweight.
A study featured in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging looked into how people with anorexia interpret emotions from others and how they respond to emotional expressions. The results show that they tend to react more intensely to faces that show fear. Let’s break down what this means.
Anxiety's impact on anorexia
The research looked into how people with anorexia handle their emotions. The team studied the brain activity of 22 young girls who had recovered their weight and observed their reactions to various emotional expressions. They were shown images of faces showing fear, anger, and surprise.
The results were interesting, revealing that there was heightened activity in the somatomotor cortex when the girls saw faces expressing fear. On the other hand, there wasn't much change in brain activity when they viewed faces showing anger, surprise, or neutral expressions.
What does this imply?

The somatomotor cortex in the brain is connected to heightened activity and movement, which are basically physical reactions tied to the 'fight or flight' response when faced with fear. In this research, scientists discovered that this part of the brain became more active in girls with anorexia when they were shown fearful faces.
This suggests a strong link between anxiety and anorexia. It’s not just about food or body image; anxiety is a fundamental part of the disorder.
When these girls see fearful expressions, it acts as a trigger, bringing their own fears and anxieties to the surface. Their brains respond more intensely in these moments. Observing fear in others can amplify their emotional turmoil, making them particularly sensitive to negative feelings.
Since anxiety is deeply rooted in anorexia, addressing that anxiety is crucial for recovery.
