ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition that primarily affects children. The disorder is characterized by a range of symptoms, including aggression, hyperactivity, impulsivity, repetitive behaviors, absent-mindedness, challenges in concentration, forgetfulness, a short attention span, as well as feelings of anger, anxiety, and depression.

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Chief of Neurology at Fortis Hospital, emphasized that “ADHD significantly contributes to poor academic performance in children, yet it often goes undiagnosed.”

Impact of ADHD on children:

Dr. Gupta elaborated, stating, “Children with ADHD struggle to maintain focus and often find it difficult to remain still. They tend to shift their attention rapidly from one task to another, which adversely affects their learning capabilities. Due to their inattention and hyperactivity, they may fail to comprehend or retain the information presented to them, leading to substantial challenges in their academic and educational development.”

Tips to tackle ADHD symptoms in children:

The doctor noted that an effective treatment plan for ADHD typically includes medication aimed at reducing hyperactivity and enhancing focus and attention. These medications are primarily stimulants that assist the brain in functioning more effectively. “Behavioral interventions and cognitive therapy are also beneficial. Cognitive behavioral therapy can aid these children in understanding their condition and improving their focus and attention,” Dr. Praveen Gupta remarked.

It is crucial for these children to receive considerable support from both their parents and educational institutions. Parents must be informed and educated about ADHD symptoms to actively engage in behavioral therapy and provide their children with the necessary care, as highlighted by Dr. Praveen Gupta.
