However, in today's social media-driven environment, where numerous trendy diet strategies frequently gain attention, it is easy to be influenced by nutritional advice that may not be as beneficial as it seems. Many popular claims do not deliver the promised results, often yielding only mediocre outcomes.
On March 18, coach Raj Ganpath utilized Instagram to highlight five overrated dietary habits that individuals should not become overly concerned about. It is an opportune moment to reassess and simplify your dietary choices. He addressed common misconceptions about certain foods and provided clarifications.
Superfoods
Certain foods are often labelled as 'superfoods,' leading many to believe they possess miraculous properties due to their nutrient content. However, is there any truth to this notion? No single food can dramatically enhance your diet or bring about significant change. A healthy diet is a collective endeavour, rather than relying on one specific food to do all the work.
Raj stated, “There is no such thing as a superfood. All foods can be considered 'super' depending on how effectively you utilize them. Each food contains energy and nutrients, but the balance varies. Some foods provide more energy with fewer nutrients, while others offer more nutrients with less energy. Your choices should align with your activity levels and health objectives. Do not expect a selection of superfoods to magically elevate your diet.”
Multivitamins have become a trending topic on social media, often promoted as a necessary supplement that everyone should take. However, in reality, they seldom offer significant benefits when consumed indiscriminately without any existing deficiencies.
The coach elaborated, “There is no research supporting the idea that taking multivitamins daily is beneficial—absolutely none. If you have a deficiency, then supplementation is advisable, but if you do not, avoid taking multivitamins without reason.”
Breakfast
An excessive emphasis is often placed on breakfast, which is frequently labelled as the most crucial meal of the day. However, the reality is that no single meal is inherently more significant than the others. The key factor is the overall intake of nutrients.
Raj stated, “Breakfast is not necessarily the most important meal. Each meal presents an opportunity to enhance your health through the consumption of energy and nutrients. It’s not limited to breakfast. If you enjoy breakfast, by all means, have it. Conversely, if you are not particularly hungry or do not enjoy it, you are free to skip it. If you believe that breakfast will energize you for the morning, then feel free to have a substantial one. However, if you do not share that belief, a light breakfast consisting of protein, vegetables, or fruit will suffice.”
Homemade food is often considered healthier than takeout, which tends to receive negative criticism. However, this unqualified endorsement of home-cooked meals can be misleading.
The coach also clarified that this notion is not entirely accurate. He elaborated, “The healthiness of a dish depends on the ingredients used and the cooking methods employed, rather than the location of its preparation. For example, grilled chicken, sautéed vegetables, and mashed potatoes will always be healthier options compared to homemade paratha and chicken curry.”
Fresh food is better than leftovers
Leftovers receive a frown, dismissed as unhealthy, while fresh foods always take the spotlight. But this belief is actually outdated. Even realistically, making fresh foods every day isn't possible.
The coach said, “ This is a mindset from the past from a time when we did not know how to store food well, when we did not have refrigeration. Today, we have these capabilities and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having leftover food. It does not lose nutrients.”
