As individuals age, the health of the brain tends to decline, which can result in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and other neurodegenerative disorders. Consequently, there is a continuous search for foods and beverages that may mitigate the risk of cognitive deterioration. A study published in npj Science of Food indicates that green tea may provide protective benefits for brain health. Let us examine the findings of this study regarding the advantages of this widely consumed beverage.

Green tea's effect on brain's health

Green tea is already well-established as an effective drink for those aiming to lose weight. It is known to facilitate weight loss. However, this study adds to the numerous advantages of green tea, specifically concerning brain health.

Consumption of green tea has been associated with improved brain health, particularly in reducing cerebral white matter lesions. As individuals age, the brain may encounter issues such as the development of white matter lesions. These lesions are indicative of small vessel diseases, which are linked to cognitive decline, vascular dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. The American Brain Foundation notes that small vessel diseases arise from the narrowing of brain arteries due to inflammation or the accumulation of misfolded proteins. The study also examined the size of the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory.

How much to drink

The findings of the study revealed that individuals who consumed green tea exhibited fewer white matter lesions. The researchers specified the optimal quantity of green tea to consume based on their analysis of the results.

Participants who ingested 600 ml of green tea daily experienced a 3% reduction in brain damage (white matter lesions) compared to those who consumed 200 ml or less. Therefore, drinking approximately three cups or more of green tea each day could be advantageous. The study further elaborated that green tea is rich in antioxidants and possesses anti-inflammatory properties, particularly due to a compound known as epigallocatechin gallate, which may aid in reducing vascular damage within the brain.

The study is particularly significant as it also included coffee in its testing. Unlike green tea, coffee did not have a substantial impact on the white lesions. This serves as an additional incentive to transition from coffee to the healthier option of green tea.
