Plant-based meats have evolved beyond being a mere niche option for vegetarians and vegans; they are fundamentally transforming our perceptions of food. In essence, plant-based diets represent more than a passing trend; they serve as a significant means of enhancing health. Experts assert that these diets can greatly lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer due to their high content of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

In a discussion with Lifestyle, Dr. Navneet Deora, who holds a PhD in Food Technology from Blue Tribe Foods, remarked, “As someone deeply engaged in the food industry, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of plant-based meats on dietary habits, providing a sustainable and health-focused alternative to animal products. Their advantages extend beyond mere popularity; they are a scientifically supported approach to improving heart health, aiding in weight management, and addressing global food challenges.”

Heart health:

One of the primary benefits of plant-based meat is its positive impact on cardiovascular health. In contrast to many conventional meat products, plant-based alternatives typically include legumes like peas, soy, and lentils, which naturally contain lower levels of unhealthy fats and cholesterol. Research suggests that substituting plant-based foods for animal products can lead to decreased levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and a reduced risk of heart disease. Additionally, most plant-based meats are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, further enhancing their health benefits.

Shifting to plant-based meat for eight weeks or less can lower cholesterol levels.

Weight handling:

Plant-based meat serves as an effective aid for weight loss and management. It contains fewer calories and lower saturated fat compared to animal meat, making it a preferable choice for individuals aiming to shed pounds. Additionally, plant-based meat is rich in protein, which enhances satiety and minimizes the likelihood of overeating. Furthermore, its high fiber content acts as a digestive support, helping to keep you feeling full for longer durations.

Veganism has led to a surge in plant-based meat substitutes like using vegan patties in burgers

Kanikka Malhotra, a Consultant Nutritionist, shared her insights on the benefits of plant-based eating, stating, “Adopting a plant-based diet can reduce your cardiovascular risk by as much as 16% by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Additionally, the high fiber and low calorie content of these foods support effective weight management, facilitating the achievement and maintenance of a healthy weight. A thoughtfully planned plant-based diet, rich in essential nutrients such as vitamin B12 and iron, can significantly enhance heart health and promote sustainable weight loss. Whether you aim to improve your overall health or address specific health objectives, incorporating plant-based foods can be transformative.”
