In contemporary society, children's lives frequently center around screen time. However, is this beneficial for their well-being? A recent study indicates that it is not. Research conducted by Dr. Eero A. Haapala from the University of Jyväskylä reveals a direct correlation between screen exposure in childhood and the emergence of stress and depressive symptoms during adolescence.

As an increasing number of children report experiencing depressive symptoms at younger ages, it is crucial for parents to reconsider the extent of screen access they allow their children. The study followed participants from elementary school through their teenage years to investigate the negative impacts of unrestricted device access on mental health.

Findings of the study

The research involved 187 Finnish children, tracked over an eight-year period, starting from ages 6-9 and continuing into their mid-teens. Their levels of physical activity, screen time, sleep patterns, and dietary habits were monitored regularly. Upon reaching adolescence (with an average age of 15.8), their mental health was evaluated to identify symptoms of stress and depression.

Here's what more screen exposure can do to your mental health.

The findings were alarming. Researchers found that teenagers who had significant screen exposure during their early years exhibited higher levels of stress and depression. Specifically, adolescents who spent five hours a day on screens, including more than two hours on mobile devices during childhood, were more susceptible to these mental health issues.

Physical activity and mental health

The study highlighted the substantial positive effects of physical activity on children's mental health. Those engaged in physical activities, particularly sports or organized exercise programs, demonstrated improved mental health outcomes. Notably, the benefits of physical activity appeared to be more pronounced in boys compared to girls.

Diet and sleep

Although diet quality and sleep patterns are essential lifestyle factors, they were found to have a lesser impact on teenagers' mental health compared to physical activity and screen exposure, which exhibited a more direct and significant influence.
