The Truth Behind Plucking Grey Hair: Dermatologist Debunks Myths
9 hours ago | 5 Views
Experiencing white hair can evoke a sense of panic, akin to a deer caught in headlights, leading one to consider the drastic measure of pulling it out. This instinct may be met with disapproving looks and stern warnings from a mother figure, who often advises that removing a single white hair could result in the surrounding strands also turning white.
Dr. Aamna Adel recently shared a video on Instagram that addresses this common concern, challenging the notion that plucking a white hair is as detrimental as many believe.
The truth behind plucking white hair strands
Dr. Adel clarified, “Each hair on your head is associated with its own follicle, functioning independently of its neighbors. The greying of hair occurs when the melanin pigment in the hair follicle ceases production.”
She further explained that only the hair that is removed will regrow as grey, without impacting the pigmentation of other hair follicles. Therefore, if a few strands have been plucked, it is unlikely that this will lead to an increase in the number of white hairs.
Other hair-related tips
In addition to concerns about greying hair, hair loss is another prevalent issue for many individuals. In 2024, HT Digital consulted experts to explore the causes of hair loss, particularly during seasonal transitions and winter months. Dr. Shweta Mishra emphasized the importance of moisturizing the scalp with nourishing oils to hydrate and strengthen hair. Many individuals are tempted to wash their hair at the first sign of oiliness; however, Dr. Mishra warned against excessive washing, as it strips the hair of its natural oils, recommending a washing frequency of only 2-3 times per week.
