The importance of nighttime brushing extends beyond just preventing cavities. Failing to brush your teeth properly or consistently can lead to cavities, tooth sensitivity, and other dental issues. However, the seemingly harmless act of skipping nighttime brushing may result in severe and life-threatening consequences. What causes this? How does the presence of bacteria in your mouth overnight become a significant concern?
In his video, Dr. Kunal Sood referenced studies that indicate, “Neglecting to brush your teeth at night may pose risks beyond cavities. Research indicates that inadequate oral hygiene is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and heart failure. The hypothesis is that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, leading to inflammation that adversely affects the heart over time. While a direct causal relationship between poor oral hygiene and heart disease has not been definitively established, a strong correlation has been identified.”

Dr. Sood noted, “Individuals who brush their teeth more frequently tend to have healthier hearts. Research indicates that brushing at least three times a day, along with regular dental cleanings, is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Furthermore, conditions such as gum disease, tooth loss, and inadequate oral hygiene have been linked to increased cardiovascular risks.”
