The Safety of Natural Chemicals: Is the Clean Beauty Trend Beneficial?

9 days ago | 5 Views

The clean beauty movement has experienced substantial growth over the past decade, and 2025 is poised to be a landmark year for organic skincare. Brands are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, ethical sourcing, and scientifically validated natural ingredients as consumers become more aware and seek enhanced transparency. Nevertheless, misunderstandings regarding ingredients, safety, efficacy, and general skincare persist within the realm of organic products, leading to unwarranted anxiety fueled by misinformation.

Debunking myths: Natural vs synthetic ingredients

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Kriti Lohia, the Founder, CEO, and Consultant Dermatologist at Aesthetics Redefined By Cocoona, emphasized, 'Individuals often overlook the fact that 'natural' does not necessarily mean 'superior.' Many dermatologists frequently highlight that not all natural substances are inherently safe, just as not all synthetic components are harmful. For example, essential oils and fragrances, which are commonly found in organic products, can often cause allergic reactions or irritation in individuals with sensitive skin.'

Salicylic Acid: This is a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that comes from willow bark. Salicylic acid can be used as an exfoliator. It seeps deep into the skin to reach the pores and unclog them.

She remarked, "Conversely, certain synthetic compounds such as salicylic acid and peptides tend to exhibit greater stability and effectiveness compared to their natural counterparts. It may come as a surprise that salicylic acid, a widely recognized substance, is derived from the bark of a willow tree. This prompts the inquiry of whether it is considered synthetic when concentrated in a laboratory setting or if it retains its classification as 'natural.'" In 2025, the aesthetics sector is adopting a clean beauty approach that harmonizes nature with scientific advancements.

Dr. Kriti Lohia stated, "The majority of clean beauty brands are concentrating on bioengineered ingredients that replicate natural substances, thereby minimizing the necessity for excessive harvesting while enhancing product stability, effectiveness, and safety. Innovations such as fermented botanicals, microbiome-friendly skincare, and plant-based alternatives to retinol, like bakuchiol, are leading this transformative movement." She emphasized, "Brands must disclose the complete truth regarding their claims, which is what renders this initiative particularly significant. The information provided should be underpinned by a robust, logic-driven framework and offer accurate data analysis and a comprehensive scope of study relevant to the subject matter at hand."

Sustainability and ethical sourcing

WithIn light of increasing concerns regarding climate change, sustainability has become an essential requirement rather than a mere trend. Dr. Kriti Lohia emphasized, 'Regardless of opinions about millennials and Gen Z, they are pioneers in this initiative. By 2025, brands prioritizing natural products will concentrate on environmentally friendly packaging, refillable containers, and biodegradable materials.'

It is important for consumers to be aware of products that are clean on the environment and ask for ingredients that are biodegradable. Also, while looking for natural ingredients, we need to look out for sustainable sourcing of the same.

Dr. Kriti Lohia notes that certain brands are dedicated to the idea of upcycled beauty, utilizing by-products from the food industry as ingredients in skincare. She emphasized that consumers are demanding accountability from companies regarding ethical sourcing, ensuring that natural resources are extracted responsibly to protect biodiversity. A prime example of this is the brand Anomaly, created by Priyanka Chopra, which exemplifies this concept effectively.

 What’s next for organic skincare?

Dr Kriti Lohia answered, The future is rooted in science that relies on evidence and formulations supported by data, integrating natural elements with scientific progress and innovation. We urge individuals to move past marketing strategies and assertions, concentrating instead on the effectiveness of ingredients to ensure that the products they select meet their skin's requirements rather than merely following fleeting trends. The expert stated, 'As we approach 2025, clean beauty is evolving from a mere trend into a deliberate, scientifically validated movement aimed at transforming aesthetics into a lifestyle. The essential aspect is to make well-informed decisions that harmonize nature with science for the benefit of both healthier skin and a more sustainable planet.'
