The Modern Work-Sleep Paradox: Why Your Job Might Be Keeping You Awake

Do you find it difficult to fall asleep at night? This challenge may stem from various influences, with one significant factor being your office chair. Indeed, this is a valid concern. A recent study conducted by Claire E. Smith at the University of South Florida indicates that the growing reliance on technology, coupled with a sedentary work environment, can negatively impact our sleep patterns.
Findings of the study:
The research, published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, monitored 1,300 full-time employees who averaged at least 46 hours of work per week. Over a decade, the participants' lifestyles were examined to assess how contemporary job characteristics affect sleep health.
The study focused on six dimensions of sleep health: the regularity of sleep, the time taken to fall asleep, the presence of insomnia symptoms, daytime fatigue levels, frequency of napping, and overall sleep duration.
The findings revealed that a sedentary lifestyle can significantly disrupt sleep routines. Participants with sedentary job roles exhibited a 37% increase in insomnia symptoms. Additionally, individuals with nontraditional work hours were 66% more likely to be classified as catch-up sleepers, relying on brief naps or weekend sleep recovery.

Claire Smith, the lead researcher and psychologist at the University of South Florida, stated, “The way we are designing work poses serious, long-term threats to healthy sleep. Healthy sleep involves more than just getting your eight hours. It’s also falling asleep easily, sleeping through the night, and having a consistent sleep schedule. Companies should be aware of the specific sleep risks of their workforce to improve detection and intervention.”
Computer exposure and sleep patterns:
The research indicated that daytime exposure to computers had beneficial effects on sleep patterns, challenging the common notion that screen time negatively impacts sleep routines. The investigators determined that using computer screens during the day is unlikely to interfere with the body's natural circadian rhythm.
