Instagram star doctor Cyriac Abby Philips, better known as The Liver Doc, is all about sharing valuable health and lifestyle tips. On Tuesday, he called out health influencers who promote supplements to their audience, highlighting the risks associated with some well-known health products.
“Instagram ‘Health Influenzas,’ including misinformed doctors acting like nutritionists and nutritionists pretending to be doctors, won’t share this info,” he noted in his caption.
Check out these supplements that can be risky:
Fish oil rich in omega-3:
Consuming it in large quantities can result in atrial fibrillation, which leads to an irregular and fast heart rhythm.
Silybum marianum:
Milk thistle has some fungal toxins known as mycotoxins, which can harm your liver, damage your kidneys, and increase the risk of different types of cancer.
Green tea:
Green tea extracts, whether taken in capsule form or as a drink, can potentially cause serious issues like hepatitis, liver failure, and even death.
Ashwagandha:
Taking around 900 grams a day could cause issues like liver damage, thyroid problems, brain fog, depression, and changes in behavior.
Giloy:
The Liver Doc pointed out that giloy, or guduchi, can be harmful in any amount and might cause autoimmune hepatitis and progressive liver failure.
Multivitamins:
Taking 1-2 pills every day for three years could lead to different types of cancer, including prostate, lung, breast, and leukemia.
Vitamin E:
The Liver Doc mentioned that Vitamin E might increase the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke by causing bleeding in the brain.
Turmeric as a dietary supplement:
Turmeric supplements might cause serious issues like heavy bleeding, liver inflammation, and even liver failure.
Herbal blends:
The Liver Doc pointed out that any amount can be dangerous, leading to issues like acute hepatitis, liver failure, kidney damage, kidney failure, and even death.
In response to The Liver Doc’s warnings, Jitendra Chouksey, the founder of the health and wellness company FITTR, said, “The main takeaway is to avoid taking things you probably don’t need! They’re probably doing more harm than good. Get a blood test; if you find a deficiency, just go for the basic supplements. If something is being hyped up a lot, it’s usually just a gimmick or a PR stunt.”
