Summer and Malaria: Doctor Highlights Key Risk Factors and Prevention Tips
7 days ago | 5 Views
The summer months, along with sporadic rain, can create ideal conditions for various diseases, particularly those spread by mosquitoes like malaria and dengue. In a chat with Lifestyle Magazine, Dr. Tushar Tayal, a consultant in internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, explained, “This season introduces weather and environmental factors that help Anopheles mosquitoes thrive, which are the main carriers of the disease. There are multiple reasons why the risk of malaria increases during this period.”
Standing water:
Summer showers combined with inadequate drainage in cities and countryside frequently result in water pooling in puddles, abandoned containers, and open drains, which become perfect spots for mosquitoes to breed.
Inadequate cleanliness and sanitation:
Inadequate sanitation and hygiene are significant factors as well. In numerous low-income areas, poor waste disposal and open sewage create ideal conditions for mosquitoes, which raises the risk of malaria spreading.
Sweltering summer temperatures:
Hot summer temperatures speed up the life cycle of mosquitoes and help the malaria parasite grow inside them. As a result, mosquitoes can spread the disease faster and in larger quantities, which causes an increase in malaria cases.
Summer outdoor adventures:
Hot weather and wearing light clothing outdoors can lead to more mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and evening, which are also popular times for people to be outside.
Neglecting to take safety precautions:
One more reason is the restricted use of preventive tools like mosquito nets, repellents, and indoor spraying, especially in low-income areas where people might not be aware of them or have trouble accessing them.
Late diagnosis and treatment:
Some areas lack proper health infrastructure, which slows down diagnosis and treatment, letting diseases spread freely. Recognizing early warning signs and taking the right precautions is crucial for staying safe.
Dr. Tushar Tayal emphasized that to tackle malaria effectively in the summer, we need to adopt thorough strategies that prioritize prevention, raise public awareness, and enhance access to healthcare services.
