During the summer, the combination of heat and humidity can make your scalp oily and greasy, which might lead to clogged hair follicles, fungal issues, and irritation. As the temperatures rise, it's crucial to prioritize proper scalp care with the right hair products.

In a chat with an Lifestyle Magzine, Dr. Viral Desai, a plastic and hair transplant surgeon and the medical director at DHI India, mentioned, “Exposure to the sun can result in burns, dryness, and long-term damage, particularly in areas where the hair is thin or parted. Taking care of your scalp during the summer is key to avoiding problems like dandruff, inflammation, and even hair loss.”

Here are some tips from the doctor:

1. Sun safety:

Before heading out in the sun, spray a broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 on your dry scalp, paying special attention to the parts and the crown. Also, consider applying a vitamin C and E serum beforehand to help combat free radicals.

2. Cooling methods:

Try a shampoo that contains 0.5-1% menthol or peppermint oil. Give your scalp a good massage for 2-3 minutes to help it absorb better, then rinse with water that's around 20-25°C. For an extra refreshing touch, finish off with a spray of alcohol-free witch hazel to enjoy its astringent and cooling benefits.

3. Wash wisely:

Wash your hair regularly: Aim to shampoo your hair 2-3 times a week, or more often if you tend to sweat a lot. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo to get rid of sweat, oil, and dirt without drying it out. If you struggle with oiliness or flakes, look for shampoos that contain tea tree oil or salicylic acid.

Don’t overdo it: Washing your hair every day can strip your scalp of its natural oils, so find a balance that works for you. If you’re feeling sweaty but don’t want to do a full wash, just rinse with water and apply a little conditioner to the ends.

Dandruff is one of the signs of an unhealthy scalp.

4. Stay hydrated:

After shampooing, use a serum designed for the scalp that contains 1-2% hyaluronic acid or aloe vera gel. Apply 1-2 pumps to your damp scalp and massage it in gently, doing this once or twice a week. If you're worried about oiliness, steer clear of the roots.

5. Scrub away dead skin cells:

Each week, use a dropper to apply a 1-2% salicylic acid treatment to different areas of your scalp. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before washing it out with shampoo. For a physical exfoliation, try using a soft silicone scalp brush and gently massage in circular motions. According to a 2022 study, salicylic acid decreased scalp scaling by 45% in humid environments, outperforming manual scrubs.
