Maintaining optimal oral health is crucial, as it also contributes to proper digestion. However, our habits regarding brushing and flossing can significantly impact our oral well-being. Therefore, it is vital to understand the correct techniques for brushing and flossing. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Neetu Kamra, Head of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, stated, “By safeguarding your oral health through effective hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing, you can retain your teeth for a lifetime. A consistent teeth cleaning routine is essential for your overall dental health.”

Here are some common brushing errors to be mindful of:

Brushing too hard:

One of the most prevalent mistakes individuals make while brushing is applying too much pressure. There is a widespread belief that the strength of your stroke is what cleans your teeth. In reality, it is the technique and motion of the brush that effectively cleans. Brushing too vigorously can erode tooth enamel and damage gums, leading to increased tooth sensitivity. If the bristles of your toothbrush appear frayed, it is an indication that you are brushing too hard.

Not changing your brush regularly:

Many individuals replace their toothbrushes only twice a year, which is insufficient. Dentists advise changing your toothbrush every three months. Using a toothbrush beyond this period is not only unhygienic but also diminishes its cleaning effectiveness.

Brushing only in the morning:

A common practice is to brush in the morning to combat bad breath. However, by the end of the day, food particles accumulate on and between your teeth. Additionally, during sleep, saliva production decreases, which normally helps cleanse the teeth. Consequently, bacteria in the mouth have access to food, leading to acid production that can result in tooth decay.

Using the wrong toothpaste while brushing your teeth:

Numerous toothpaste brands are on the market, making it challenging to choose the right one. While no single toothpaste is superior to all others, it is essential to select one that contains fluoride. Fluoride plays a vital role in preventing tooth decay, and your toothpaste should have a fluoride concentration of between 1350 and 1500 parts per million (ppm).

Don't forget to brush your teeth at night.

Not flossing daily:

Establishing a daily flossing routine is important. Flossing is recommended to eliminate plaque from areas that a toothbrush cannot effectively clean. If plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate daily flossing into your oral hygiene practices.

Not cleaning your tongue:

The tongue can harbor bacteria and is often responsible for bad breath. After brushing your teeth, use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to clean your tongue. This practice will help reduce the number of germs in your mouth and enhance your breath.

Focusing on the wrong area of the tooth:

Cavities and decay frequently start at the roots of the teeth, where plaque and tartar can build up. The gum line is particularly susceptible to bacteria due to its narrow spaces, which are difficult to clean. For a more effective cleaning routine, position your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to better target the gums and molars. If you are uncertain about your brushing technique, consider consulting a dentist for guidance.

Storing your toothbrush incorrectly:

Storing your toothbrush in a confined area, such as a cabinet, can lead to bacterial growth if it is left wet. Allow your toothbrush to air dry before putting it away. Ensure that the handle is clean and that the brush head does not come into contact with other toothbrushes.
