8 days ago | 5 Views
Summer has officially arrived! In India, this season brings along humidity, sweat, and those dreaded heatwave warnings. Heatwaves and the hot winds, known as loo, can really take a toll on people’s health. It’s crucial to take the right precautions to get through the summer safely.
In a chat with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sanah Merchant, a consultant physician and infectious disease expert at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, mentioned, “The rise in heat exposure is a global issue linked to climate change. Our bodies have several ways to regulate temperature, but when it gets too hot, these mechanisms can struggle, leading to various health issues like dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, which can have serious consequences, including death.” The doctor shared some tips to help you stay safe and healthy this summer.
Your go-to guide for thriving in the summer:
- Signs of heat-related illness include fever, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.
- To keep your home cool, use fans and cover sun-facing windows with curtains or drapes. Hanging wet towels can also help lower the temperature. Try to avoid sitting near windows that get direct sunlight.
- Seek shade during the scorching midday hours on hot days.
- Steer clear of intense workouts; if you must exercise, do it in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler.
- In the meantime, relax in the shade and never leave kids or pets in parked cars. Taking cool showers or baths can also help.
- Opt for light, loose clothing, and don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses when heading outside. Always carry a water bottle with you.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but limit your intake of caffeine and sugar.
- Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.
- Make sure to check in on family, neighbors, and those who are elderly or unwell, especially if they live alone.

Ways to cope when you're feeling under the weather:
- Chill out in a cool spot for a bit until you start feeling better.
- Drink some rehydration solution and seek medical assistance.
- Lower your body temperature with damp clothes or cool water.
- Find a cooler area to relax in.
