Standing and Drinking Water: What Nutritionists Say About the Risks
3 days ago | 5 Views
It is widely believed that consuming water while standing may have negative effects on our joints and could result in pain. For many years, we have been advised to sit down and allow our bodies to relax before hydrating rather than doing so while standing. However, how valid is this belief?
Dietician Juhi Arora addressed this topic in a video shared on March 28, dispelling the myths surrounding it. In her presentation, she stated that despite these beliefs persisting over generations, there is no biological basis for them. She explained that when we drink water, it passes through the esophagus and enters the stomach.
“The notion that drinking water while standing can harm your knees is more of a myth than a reality. There is no scientific proof indicating that standing while drinking water has a direct effect on knee health. Some individuals may think that standing could lead to the water being absorbed into the stomach too rapidly, potentially causing discomfort or indigestion. However, this is not specifically related to knee health,” she noted in her caption.
Ill-effects of standing and drinking water:
However, in an earlier interview with Healthshots, Dr Vipul Rustgi, general physician, Apollo Spectra, Delhi said that it is harmful to drink water while standing.
The doctor pointed out the health issues that drinking water while standing can trigger:
- When we drink water while standing, the water rushes into the food pipe and then in the stomach in speed disrupting digestion process.
- When we drink water while standing, the nerves get into a state of tension, disrupting the balance of fluids. This can lead to fluid accumulation in the joints over time, leading to arthritis.
- Dr Vipul Rustgi added that when we stand and drink water, the required nutrients and vitamins do not reach the liver and digestive tract.
- “While standing and drinking water, the fluid tends to pass through without any filtration to one’s lower stomach under high pressure. This causes the water impurities to settle in the bladder and damage the functioning of the kidneys,” Dr Vipul Rustgi said.
