Menopause is that stage in a woman's life when she stops getting her period, and perimenopause is the time leading up to that. Typically, this hits women in their late 40s, bringing along a bunch of symptoms. But a recent study by Dr. Jennifer Payne from the University of Virginia shows that many women in their 30s are also experiencing perimenopause, with symptoms intense enough that they really need to see a doctor.

Study results:

A study involving 4,432 women in the U.S. found that over half of those aged 30-35 reported symptoms similar to perimenopause. Medical experts confirmed that these symptoms were indeed related to perimenopause, which challenges the long-held belief that menopause and perimenopause only affect women in their late 40s and 50s.

Dr. Jennifer Payne, MD, a reproductive psychiatry expert at UVA Health and the University of Virginia School of Medicine, stated, “The physical and emotional symptoms linked to perimenopause are often overlooked and not well-researched by doctors. This study is crucial for understanding how prevalent these symptoms are, their effects on women, and for raising awareness among both healthcare providers and the public.”

Hot flashes and night sweats are common during menopause.

This study is a real eye-opener:

The research aimed to raise awareness about perimenopause and post-menopause, which are often lumped together with menopause, making it tough for women to manage their symptoms.

It clarified that early perimenopause is marked by occasional missed periods, while late perimenopause brings more significant menstrual irregularities, including longer stretches without a period. Also check out tips for maintaining bone health during menopause.

The researchers noted various psychological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and irritability, along with physical issues such as sexual dysfunction, bladder problems, and vaginal dryness. They also identified hot flashes and night sweats as the typical menopause symptoms. Interestingly, the study found that cognitive symptoms tend to show up first during perimenopause, followed by the physical ones.
