Nanoplastics are extremely small plastic particles, measuring less than 1 micrometre in diameter, rendering them invisible to the naked eye. Due to their minuscule size, these particles can infiltrate the human biological system, affecting various components from the bloodstream to internal organs. A study published in the journal Neuroscience investigated the impact of these nanoplastics on brain development and social behavior.
Understanding nanoplastic’s effect
The researchers focused on the influence of nanoplastics on the brains and behaviors of mice. They administered nanoplastics to pregnant mice at various stages of development. The exposure began while the mice were still in utero, continued through infancy, and extended into early adulthood. Throughout the study, the researchers assessed both behavioral patterns and brain activity. They discovered that the timing of exposure to nanoplastics significantly affected the mice's responses.
Different reactions
Mice exposed to nanoplastics during late pregnancy or early adulthood exhibited difficulties in social interactions. They displayed heightened anxiety in unfamiliar environments, often freezing in place and showing considerable distress. Additionally, these mice demonstrated a decrease in social engagement, interacting less with their peers and lacking normal social behaviors. This heightened anxiety was accompanied by disruptions in brain activity in areas associated with dopamine, a hormone crucial for regulating mood and behavior, often referred to as the "happy hormone." This disruption may explain their increased anxiety levels.
In contrast, mice exposed to nanoplastics during mid-pregnancy exhibited reduced movement and slower physical responses. Those exposed during adolescence showed increased brain activity but did not exhibit significant behavioral changes compared to their counterparts exposed at other developmental stages.
The findings are noteworthy as they highlight the potential dangers posed by nanoplastics. These minuscule particles can infiltrate the human body, particularly during vulnerable stages such as pregnancy. The implications are profound, as they may interfere with brain functions associated with mood regulation, social interactions, and motor skills.
