Sleep vs. Screen: The Addiction Behind Binge-Watching

Sleep vs. Screen: The Addiction Behind Binge-Watching

1 month ago | 5 Views

Binge-watching has emerged as a prevalent practice in contemporary entertainment. Despite the fatigue evident in tired eyes and the frequent yawns, the temptation to click the ‘next episode’ button remains compelling. Once an individual becomes engrossed in binge-watching, their focus narrows to the screen before them, often resulting in a disconnection from the passage of time. The engrossing nature of the screen can be so consuming that one may not even notice the arrival of dawn, as what was intended to be a single episode before sleep transforms into an all-night viewing session, with the body yearning for rest.

At some point, nearly everyone has succumbed to the enticing call of ‘next episode.’ Therefore, it is worthwhile to examine the psychological factors that contribute to this intense viewing behavior and to consider whether the allure of the next episode resembles the characteristics of addiction, even if only temporarily.

In a discussion with HT, Dr. Rajiv Mehta, Vice-Chairperson of Psychiatry at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, provided an in-depth analysis of the addictive nature of the desire for one more episode and its potential detrimental effects.

Why do people binge-watch

People binge watch with all their will force, overriding their physical need for rest.

To comprehend the phenomenon of binge-watching and its seemingly irresistible nature, it is essential to explore the reasons behind individuals' inability to pause, even when rest is warranted. What is it about the captivating nature of visual media that makes it challenging to disengage, despite feelings of exhaustion? Let us analyze the compelling factors that keep weary eyes fixed on screens.

Dr. Rajiv Mehta first articulated the concept of binge-watching and its origins. He stated, “Binge-watching resembles binge eating in that the pause or stop button seems ineffective while consuming a series or film. This trend emerged with the easy accessibility of content on OTT platforms, often leading to thoughts of ‘just a few more minutes’ or ‘one more episode.’”

It is crucial to delve into what induces this hypnotic state in viewers during binge-watching sessions. Despite intentions to conclude with the last episode, many find themselves clicking on the next installment before the credits have fully rolled. The factors that contribute to this compulsive behavior are varied and complex.

Dr. Mehta further explained, “Binge-watching can be likened to having just one more drink. It delivers a continuous influx of dopamine, which enhances feelings of pleasure and reinforces the behavior. The structure of these shows often leaves viewers in a state of curiosity, compelling them to seek immediate resolution, especially when the subsequent episode is readily accessible. For some, binge-watching serves as an escape from stress, boredom, or unwanted emotions, while others may engage in it due to peer pressure or the desire for social validation.”

Dark side of binge-watching

Extreme exhaustion next day at work may be common.

The captivating trend of binge-watching, often humorously depicted through memes on social media, harbors a more troubling aspect. Dr. Rajiv Mehta pointed out that this behavior can be compared to a short-term addiction, adversely affecting personal, social, and professional spheres. Additionally, it is associated with various health risks. He noted that excessive binge-watching contributes to a sedentary lifestyle.

Dr. Mehta outlined the detrimental effects of this habit, stating, “The extent of harm is influenced by the duration, frequency, and intensity of binge-watching. It can lead to significant health issues, strain relationships, and impact professional life. Staying up late disrupts sleep patterns, resulting in fatigue, diminished cognitive abilities, mood fluctuations, accidents, and subpar job performance.”

He elaborated on how binge-watching consumes valuable time that could otherwise be spent on health-promoting activities such as exercise or adequate sleep. Dr. Mehta indicated that this behavior may lead to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and joint pain.

Moreover, this habit not only jeopardizes physical health but also social interactions, potentially becoming life-threatening if taken to extremes. He remarked, “In social contexts, it can cause family discord and social isolation. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety can both trigger and result from binge-watching. In some cases, an abrupt cessation of binge-watching may provoke extreme reactions, including homicidal or suicidal tendencies.”

In conclusion, while binge-watching may appear appealing—finishing an entire series in one go—it poses significant health risks. What may seem like a harmless indulgence in your favorite show often leads to a cycle of self-deception, as you convince yourself it will be the last time, only to find yourself once again engrossed in yet another trending series or revisiting a familiar favorite for the fifth time.

It is essential to cultivate a healthy relationship with screens; otherwise, one may easily revert to previous habits of excessive viewing, which can adversely affect overall health.
