A study featured in the Journal of Sleep Research has shown that disruptions in sleep significantly elevate the chances of having nightmares.

Interestingly, one might think that experiencing a nightmare would invariably worsen sleep quality, potentially leading to waking up in distress and having trouble returning to slumber. Contrary to this assumption, the reality is different.

How poor sleep quality leads to disturbing dreams

Waking up at night disturbs the natural flow of sleep, especially the deeper stages that help us recover both physically and emotionally. But when interrupted, the brain doesn’t get enough time to process emotions properly, leaving you sensitive the next night.

The researchers instructed participants to utilize wearable sleep-tracking devices to assess brain activity during the night. The findings were compelling: individuals who experienced poor sleep quality—whether due to difficulty falling asleep or frequent awakenings—were more likely to encounter nightmares the following night. However, the study challenges a prevalent belief; it found that nightmares do not disrupt subsequent sleep. It is crucial to emphasize that inadequate sleep quality lays the groundwork for nightmares.

This is noteworthy as it indicates that the emotional consequences of poor sleep tend to persist into the following night, fostering an environment conducive to nightmares. The research demonstrated that individuals who frequently awaken during the night become more emotionally sensitive, which can lead to nightmares the next evening. When sleep is interrupted, it hampers the ability to process emotions, leaving individuals emotionally vulnerable the next night, which is particularly favorable for the occurrence of nightmares.

Deep sleep and nightmares

A recent study revealed an intriguing and somewhat unexpected discovery regarding deep sleep, also known as N3 sleep, which is typically associated with healing and restoration. However, it appears that individuals may experience nightmares during this phase of sleep. The researchers suggested that this phenomenon could be attributed to a rebound effect, where the brain attempts to compensate for sleep deprivation from the previous night by entering a deeper state of rest. Unfortunately, the emotional residue from the prior night may resurface, leading to bizarre and unsettling nightmares.
