For many people, remote work or a hybrid model has become the norm. If you are one of those who work from home, you may have noticed that prolonged sitting can result in stiffness, muscle weakness, and a decrease in overall fitness levels. The Mayo Clinic indicates that excessive sitting, especially for extended periods, can increase the risk of mortality linked to cardiovascular disease and cancer.

‘Sitting is the new smoking’

This indicates that the emerging phrase "sitting is the new smoking" may hold some validity. Therefore, what measures can you take to ensure that extended periods of sitting are advantageous for your health? In a recent podcast featuring Revant Himatsin (also known as Food Pharmer), fitness expert Bharath Jain proposed four exercises suitable for individuals who spend excessive time seated.

Bharath provided concise and effective movement strategies designed to keep you free from discomfort, robust, and invigorated—all without having to leave your workspace. Let us explore the exercises he recommended.

Exercises for people who sit too much

1. Neck Stretch: Position your hands behind your back to one side and gently stretch your neck. Perform this exercise 10 times on each side.

2. Side and Back Stretch: Bharath recommended this straightforward exercise for alleviating lower back discomfort. “Sit at the front of your chair, cross one leg over the other, and lean forward. Hold this position for 2 seconds before returning to the starting position,” Bharath described.

3. Lower Back Stretch: Maintain an upright posture and draw your knee towards your chest. This stretch effectively targets the lower back.

4. Shoulder Stretch or Shoulder Rolls: To execute this stretch, sit at the front of your chair with an upright posture and rotate your shoulders backwards, engaging your shoulder blades. Complete 10 to 20 repetitions.

What are the consequences of prolonged sitting? According to FoodPharmer, sitting for more than 10 hours a day not only exacerbates bodily pain but also elevates the risk of heart failure and mortality.
