Sickle Cell Anemia and Breathlessness After Mild Exertion

It is common for individuals to attribute shortness of breath following mild physical exertion to mere fatigue or tiredness. However, this symptom may signal more serious health issues. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Divya Bansal, a consultant in clinical haematology and bone marrow transplantation at Manipal Hospital Dwarka in New Delhi, emphasized that such symptoms could point to underlying health concerns, including low haemoglobin levels or anaemia. One potential cause of anaemia is Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA), a hereditary blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormally shaped red blood cells.

Dr. Bansal elaborated that while healthy red blood cells are typically round, those affected by SCA adopt a crescent or sickle shape. This abnormal morphology hinders the efficient flow of oxygen-carrying red blood cells through blood vessels, potentially leading to oxygen shortages in various body regions. Consequently, patients may experience shortness of breath due to insufficient oxygen supply, which can also be associated with acute chest syndrome.

What are the other symptoms of sickle cell anaemia?

Recurrent pain: Pain may arise when there is an obstruction in blood flow. This obstruction can occur in various parts of the body, primarily impacting the chest, abdomen, or joints.

Fatigue: As sickle cells cannot carry oxygen properly, chronic fatigue is mostly present.

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs): Patients with SCA are prone to lung infections since the immune system gets weakened, thereby impacting the system's ability to work against pathogens.

Risk of stroke: The severity of the condition increases the risk of strokes, particularly in young patients due to compromised oxygen supply to the brain.
