AI is increasingly utilized across various domains, ranging from crafting personalized travel plans to generating recipes based on leftover ingredients. The scope of AI appears limitless, addressing a wide array of our requirements. Its ability to facilitate seamless interactions, continuously learning and personalizing conversations, prompts thought-provoking inquiries.

Given AI's vast potential, could it also serve as a source of mental support? This could encompass casual discussions about daily experiences, simply needing someone to listen, or seeking encouragement for minor achievements. However, where should the boundary be drawn? Is it appropriate to employ AI for mental support at all?

In a recent interview with HT, Dr. Deepak Patkar, Director of Medical Services and Head of Imaging at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, elaborated on the role of AI chatbots, their appropriate applications, and the limits that should be observed.

Easier access to first emotional support

AI chatbots can be used to gain a better understanding of the feelings and emotional, but not resolve them.

AI chatbots can assist individuals in better understanding their emotions, although they do not resolve emotional issues. They offer convenience and easy accessibility, delivering personalized responses with a simple prompt. Highlighting these advantages, Dr. Patkar stated, “AI chatbots, powered by advanced machine learning and natural language processing, have transformed the availability of mental health services. They are an appealing option for initial emotional support, as they provide users with prompt, non-judgmental feedback when expressing their thoughts or feelings. Nevertheless, they occupy a nuanced position in the realm of mental health.”

When AI chatbot is fine

As Dr. Patkar noted, AI chatbots are suitable for providing initial emotional support. He further indicated that research shows these chatbots can effectively assist with low-intensity issues, such as moderate anxiety or stress.

He elaborated, “Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques are integrated into applications such as Woebot and Wysa to help users recognize and address negative thoughts. These tools provide round-the-clock support and can reduce stigma, particularly for individuals hesitant to seek professional help. Furthermore, chatbots excel in teaching emotional coping strategies and monitoring mood trends.”

When AI chatbot is NOT fine

AI does have limitations in certain areas where it cannot offer sufficient mental health support. It is essential to recognize these boundaries. Dr. Patkar emphasized the shortcomings of AI assistance, particularly in contexts where it cannot replicate the depth and expertise of professional mental health care.

He stated, “Chatbots are incapable of diagnosing or treating complex mental health conditions, and they lack the profound empathy and understanding that humans possess. Ethical concerns arise regarding privacy, the potential for miscommunication, and their inability to effectively handle emergencies. A tragic incident underscores the limitations of chatbots in high-risk situations when they fail to safeguard a user during a critical moment.”

Safe zone

So, where should the balance be struck? Is there a place for AI in mental health support? The key distinction lies in understanding the appropriate context for utilizing AI.

Dr. Patkar clarified, “Chatbots serve as valuable tools for informal purposes, such as venting frustrations or managing everyday stress. They are most effective when used alongside traditional therapy, rather than as a replacement. If you are experiencing severe emotional distress, suicidal ideation, or persistent sadness, it is crucial to consult a licensed mental health professional.”

He elaborated on the appropriate boundaries for utilizing AI chatbots. These boundaries emphasize the understanding that chatbots serve as a preliminary tool for exploring one's emotions, rather than a remedy for more significant issues. Dr. Patkar emphasized, "When professional help is necessary, it should always take precedence, and AI tools should be used judiciously within their intended scope."
