Shoes On or Off Indoors? Weighing the Pros and Cons for Foot Health and Home Hygiene

There is a unique satisfaction in removing your shoes after a lengthy day; however, have you ever considered whether walking barefoot on hard surfaces is beneficial for your feet? Although it may not always provide the utmost comfort, experts in podiatry and dermatology indicate that there are several unexpected advantages, as well as some risks to take into account

The argument for barefoot walking

Walking without footwear—meaning no shoes or socks, allowing direct contact between skin and floor—is a straightforward yet effective method for enhancing the intrinsic muscles of the feet. Dr. Robert Conenello, a licensed clinical podiatrist, shared with HuffPost that these muscles often weaken over time due to the habitual use of shoes.

“As we grow older and continue to wear shoes, the strength of our foot muscles diminishes, which can result in mobility challenges in later years,” Conenello noted. “Walking barefoot at home encourages the engagement of these muscles, promoting improved movement and metabolic efficiency.”

A walk in nature, barefoot in grass helps us to feel more grounded in the moment and calms the nervous system.

Dermatologist Dr. Hannah Kopelman emphasized an additional advantage: enhanced skin health. "Walking barefoot enables your skin to breathe, which minimizes moisture accumulation and decreases the likelihood of fungal infections such as athlete's foot," she stated.

An unexpected benefit is that traversing various surfaces—such as tile, wood, or textured rugs—provides a form of mini reflexology, which can be grounding, soothing, and advantageous for overall wellness.

Is walking barefoot always advisable?

While there are evident advantages, certain drawbacks must also be taken into account. Potential risks include:

  • Exposure to allergens and bacteria – Bare feet may come into contact with dust, pet dander, and cleaning agents, potentially leading to skin irritation.
  • Increased risk of injury – Have you ever stepped on a Lego or stubbed your toe? Walking without footwear raises the likelihood of encountering sharp objects, which can be painful and even hazardous for individuals with diabetes or circulation problems.
  • Foot strain and discomfort – Hard surfaces like tile and hardwood lack cushioning, which may result in foot fatigue or conditions such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain caused by inflamed tissue).

Here's how to prepare your feet and body before starting to walk barefoot

When should you wear shoes or socks?

Experts concur that moderation is essential. While there are advantages to occasionally going barefoot, certain circumstances necessitate foot protection.

When cooking for extended durations – Prolonged standing without footwear can exert excessive pressure on specific areas of the foot, resulting in discomfort or pain. Wearing cushioned shoes can aid in evenly distributing weight.

For individuals with sensitive skin or foot ailments – Those suffering from conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or diabetes should refrain from walking barefoot, as even minor injuries may lead to serious complications.

On slippery or wet surfaces – In homes with slick flooring, utilizing non-slip socks or soft house shoes can help avert unexpected slips and falls.

In conclusion: Achieve a balance

Walking barefoot at home can enhance foot strength, skin health, and relaxation; however, it is crucial to remain aware of potential hazards. Experts recommend striking a balance—going barefoot when comfortable while opting for protective footwear when necessary.

Thus, when you enter your home, you have the option: to go barefoot or to wear shoes. The decision is yours.
