Shocking Study Reveals Link Between Waist Size and Diabetes-Related Deaths
3 months ago | 5 Views
Did you know that your waist size could actually play a role in protecting you from diabetes? A recent study revealed surprising findings, showing how waist circumference influences mortality rates. Led by Huizhong Ji from Northern Jiangsu People’s Hospital, the research examined survival rates in American participants and uncovered a hidden connection between waist size and diabetes-related mortality, highlighting significant differences between men and women.
Findings of the study:
The study, published in Exploratory Research and Hypothesis in Medicine, involved 3,151 women and 3,473 men with diabetes, tracked from 2003 to 2018 to analyze their survival rates. The researchers made an intriguing discovery: women with a waist circumference of 107 centimetres had the lowest mortality rate, while for men, the optimal waist size was 89 centimetres, aligning closely with recommended health standards. Interestingly, for women, a waist circumference that reduces mortality risk was much higher than the typical health guideline.
For years, scientists have warned about the dangers of visceral fat, especially for individuals with diabetes. The study reinforced that both insufficient and excessive belly fat can pose health risks for both men and women.

Mortality risk in men vs. women:
The study revealed that the relationship between waist size and mortality risk varied between men and women. For women, a waist circumference either below 107 centimetres or above it was found to be risky, while for men, a waist size exceeding 89 centimetres significantly increased the mortality risk associated with diabetes.
The researchers used the concept of the "obesity paradox" to explain their findings. This term refers to the phenomenon where individuals with higher body weight than recommended may have a lower mortality risk for certain chronic conditions. However, this study is the first of its kind to link waist circumference specifically to mortality risk in people with diabetes.
